Box Score LaGrange, GA - The Piedmont College volleyball team won its seventh conference match of the 2013 season earlier tonight taking a tough 3-1 victory over LaGrange College at the home of the Panthers. Having already defeated the in-state foe in straight sets once earlier this year at a tri-match hosted in Demorest, the Lady Lions needed four sets this time around to knock off the Panthers as Piedmont moved to an incredible 21-3 on the year.
LaGrange took the first set between the two winning 25-20 before Piedmont would go on to win the next three taking set #2 by a resounding 25-12 score. PC then took the third set 25-16 and the fourth 25-20 to earn the overall 3-1 match victory, its second straight win in USA South play. Piedmont is now 5-1 away from home in conference contests in 2013.
The Lady Lions tallied double digit kills in each of the four sets between the two while the Panthers were only able to do so twice. LaGrange made no attacking errors in the first set as a key piece of taking the opening set decision, but went on to make 20 in the next three sets hitting -.179 in the second under the pressuring defensive efforts of the Lady Lions.
Tallying 15 kills in 28 attempts to lead the team was senior
Kaitlin Norman who also topped the squad with her .429 hitting percentage. Two more Lady Lions were in double digits in the kill department as youngster
Taylor Cramsey collected 14 and freshman
Mallory Leary tacked on ten more to the effort. That trio of Norman, Cramsey, and Leary accounted for 39 of the team's 52 kills in the match.
Setter
Xandy Green came within one assist of 30 for the second time in her last four matches as she collected 29 on the night to lead the team. The next closest Lady Lion in that category was senior
Katheryn Knarr who had a half dozen.
Simpsonville native
Katie Faith was the team's leader in digs with her 25 while senior
Jessica Hollis had 18 on the night. Only one Panther was in the double digits in that category on the evening as Piedmont had 73 digs compared to just 50 for LaGrange.
With the win, Piedmont moves to 21-3 overall and 7-2 in conference play which puts them second in the South Division behind leader Maryville College. The Lady Lions will be in action next this coming weekend when they play host to a pair of conference foes in Meredith College and Methodist University.
The Saturday tri-match starts at noon in the Cave and is also a Pink-Out for the Lady Lion volleyball program as they along with the conference foes will show their support for the fight against breast cancer by wearing pink throughout the day. Fans attending the matches on the October 19th showdown are also encouraged to wear pink themselves and will have the opportunity to donate to the Susan G. Komen foundation.
