Box Score 2 Greensboro, NC - The Piedmont College volleyball team has definitely had its share of battles this season and earlier this afternoon was no exception as the Lady Lions traveled to Guilford College for a tri-match with the hosting Quakers and Shenandoah University. After Piedmont took a 3-0 decision over Shenandoah to open the day, PC would need to rally from two sets down for the second time this week to keep its double-digit winning streak alive doing so with a 3-2 win over Guilford.
With Guilford hosting the tri match today, PC made quick work of its first opponent, Shenandoah University, in the neutral site match between the two programs winning 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-21). The straight sets win moves Piedmont's record to a perfect 6-0 in neutral site games as the Lady Lions have taken the last two such matches with 3-0 decisions.
Tied for the lead in kills with ten each was versatile junior
Jennifer Opper and emerging sophomore star
Taylor Cramsey as both also posted outstanding hitting percentages. Opper was 10 for 19 with just three errors to hit .368 while Cramsey lead all hitters in the match with her .444 on 10 of 18 with a pair of errors. Two more Lady Lions added a half dozen kills to the effort in
Ashley Fannon and
Kaitlin Norman.
Tallying 21 digs was
Katie Faith to lead the way in that department, the third straight match that Faith has accumulated at least 21 digs. Prior to this three-game stretch for the libero from Florida, Faith had totaled 21 digs or more just once in the Lady Lions' previous 12 matches. Piedmont's set assist leader against Shenandoah was
Katheryn Knarr who had 21 while
Xandy Green added 14 more to the cause.
After the 3-0 shutout of Shenandoah, Piedmont ran into the home team which looked at first to be too much for the girls from Demorest to handle as Guilford used its home court advantage to burst out to a quick two sets to none lead care of a pair of 25-22 decisions. However, Head Coach
Sid Feldman's Lady Lions would not go quietly proving to the Quakers that they had indeed come to play thundering to a 25-13 win in set number three to stay alive before forcing a decisive fifth set with a 25-20 win in set number four.
All that action set up a thrilling end to the day in Greensboro as Piedmont and Guilford would battle for the match in a final race to 15 points. All the while hanging in the balance was a program-record 12 straight wins for the Lady Lions who would need to come back from two sets down in a match for the second time in the last three matches to keep the streak alive.
With hearts pounding, Piedmont established a 12-7 lead looking to come-from-behind once more on the week until Guilford's well-place timeout helped the home team get back two points. Piedmont's 13th point care of a
Jennifer Opper kill stopped the rally by Guilford momentarily as another PC point made the score 14-9 with PC serving for match point.
However, a kill by Guilford's Brittany DeCesare put the home team back on the serve with Piedmont now leading 14-10. The switch of momentum would only be temporary as the cardiac cats from Demorest struck again with youngster
Katelyn Dobbs sealing the deal on an attack that handed Piedmont yet another come-from-behind 3-2 match victory and the program's 13th straight win.
"Guilford had a great game plan for us, and they were executing it to perfection throughout the match," said Piedmont Head Coach
Sid Feldman of his team's incredible win. "They were digging everything we were trying to put down. It took us two games to figure out where the holes were and what they were doing against us that was so effective. But, we made some adjustments that worked and helped us get our rhythm back that we had lost earlier in the match, and were able to get the win. It was incredible effort by both teams."
Posting a season-high in kills to lead the way offensively was senior
Ashley Fannon who had 16 on the match in 38 attempts to hit .316 with four errors. Fannon's performance was a career best for the four year player who will celebrate senior day along with her three classmates this Sunday against Agnes Scott in the Cave.
Dobbs, who picked up the match-clinching point on a kill against Guilford, had ten kills on 21 attempts against the Quakers to hit .286. Also getting ten kills was Cramsey who did so on 39 attempts.
Katie Faith had 22 digs to continue her stretch of 21 digs or more to now four straight matches though several other Lady Lions reached double digits in the same category including
Xandy Green,
Ashley Fannon,
Katheryn Knarr, and
Jessica Hollis.
The Lady Lions have not lost a match in 28 days as their last loss came four weeks ago today with a fall to Sewanee-University of the South who is off to a 10-5 start of their own. Piedmont is currently riding a 13-match winning streak having dropped just nine sets in that same stretch while winning the necessary 39 - an average better than four sets to one.
