Lady Lion Volleyball Takes Two of Three on Second Day of Sewanee Invitational

Kaitlin Norman did it all for Piedmont in its second win of the day picking up 13 digs and 13 kills in PC's 3-2 victory over Cumberland at the Sewanee Invitational.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Sewanee, TN - The Piedmont College volleyball team took two of three matches on the second and final day of the Sewanee Invitational to post an incredible 4-1 showing on the opening weekend of 2013.  The day's effort included wins over Cumberland University of Tennessee and Fisk University which helped the squad overcome an early morning loss to the tourney host Sewanee, PC's only defeat of the event.

In the Sewanee match, the Tigers overtook the Lady Lions in three straight with PC staying tight until Sewanee reached 15 points in the set when they would start to pull away.  Sewanee took the match 25-18, 25-16, 25-10 for their third win of the season and third in the tourney as the Tigers would later take two more to move to a perfect 5-0 on the season.

"That was one of the best teams (Sewanee) we will probably see all season," said Head Coach Sid Feldman of the much improved squad.  "They were well-coached, really disciplined, played great volleyball.  Now we know what we need to work on going forward."

Piedmont was led in kills by Jackie Campbell as the junior continues to impress in her first action with the Lady Lions.  Katie Faith led the squad in digs as she would do once more later in the day tallying 10 against Sewanee with Katheryn Knarr following with six.  Knarr also added six assists as Xandy Green led the team in that column with nine.

Fisk was next on the list for PC in the day as Piedmont would quickly rebound from its first loss of 2013 to take the match in four from the Nashville-based school.  The Lady Lions won 25-11 in the first two sets before dropping a tight third 25-22.  In the fourth and final set, PC claimed their own tight set 25-23 for the match winner.

Campbell was second on the list with six kills as Kaitlin Norman dominated the net in this match with 14 to lead all hitters.  Faith led for the second time on the day in the digs column with 13 as Campbell added seven and Green chipped in ten.  Knarr was the assists leader with 19 while Green had ten to place second.

In the third and final match of the day for the girls from Demorest, Piedmont was able to overcome one of its shortcomings in 2012 - five set match results.  Last season, PC dropped three of four matches decided in five sets.  Against Cumberland, Piedmont went to five and came away with a huge victory to push their overall record to 4-1.

"Last season we really struggled in five set matches," remarked Feldman. "Today, we showed that was no longer a problem for us picking up a tough win over a good Cumberland team in five."

Piedmont won the second set 25-19 after dropping the first with the same set score.  In the third, Cumberland won 25-21 while Piedmont responded with a 25-17 result in the fourth.  In the deciding fifth, the Lady Lions battled to a 15-13 winner for the 3-2 overall match win.

Norman again led in kills with 13, one shy of her daily high 14 in the previous match, while Campbell was again second with seven.  The assist leader was Green who tallied an impressive 24 on the match while Knarr added 14.  Norman did it all leading in the digs column with 13 while Faith added a dozen.

Taking two of three on day 2 of the Invitational moved Piedmont to 4-1 in 2013.  The Lady Lions now get a week off from competition before hosting a tri-match on Saturday, September 7th with Oglethorpe and Brenau coming to town.  Action starts at noon in the Cave.
