Box Score 2 Maryville, TN - Less than 24 hours after completing a USA South tri-match at home in the Cave, the Piedmont College volleyball team was at it again traveling to conference rival Maryville College for another tri-match this time hosted by the Tennessee school.  The hosting Scots knocked off the Lady Lions in four sets while NAIA member Martin Methodist University defeated Piedmont in straight sets to hand the Lady Lions their second loss of the day and third in their last four matches.
In PC's opening match of the day against host Maryville, the Lady Lions were able to see a pair of hitters reach double-digits in the kills column for the match with
Jackie Campbell and
Jennifer Opper combining for 21 kills in the match.  However, as a team Piedmont was able to only reach double-digit kills in two of the four sets against the Scots while Maryville did so in all four sets winning the match 3-1 overall (22-25, 25-19, 25-11,25-22).  The loss against the conference foe is also the second such defeat this season as the South Division leading Scots were victorious in a match in the Cave earlier this season by the same overall score line.
After falling to Maryville in the opening match of the day, Piedmont was unable to recover dropping a straight sets decision to Martin Methodist University to wrap up the Sunday action for the Lady Lions.  In a battle that matched up two great volleyball minds with Piedmont led by former UGA Coach
Sid Feldman and Martin Methodist led by former Olympic Silver Medalist turned Coach Rose Powell, the Lady Lions would fall 25-23, 25-23, and 25-19 in the tightly contested decision.
Four Lady Lions were in double-digits in the kill department with Opper and Campbell joining junior
Kaitlin Norman and youngster
Amanda Trotter on that list.  Norman had 16 kills on 58 attempts with 16 errors as well while Trotter tabbed her 11 kills on 40 attempts to go with nine errors.
After totaling 29 set assists in yesterday's tri-match at home, Piedmont's
Xandy Green collected 30 in today's action away from campus to lead all Lady Lions in that column.  Senior
Katheryn Knarr added 18 to the effort while newcomer
Heather LaPrade from Acworth, Georgia was able to collect 13 assists in her time on the court in Maryville.  All three averaged better than four helpers per set in the tri-match.
Norman was also the team's blocking leader with four total to her name as she also added seven digs to the effort while three others tallied double-digits defensively.  The leader in digs was again
Katie Faith who had 27 at her libero position while Green chipped in 26 and defensive specialist
Jessica Hollis had 17 in seven sets played.
The pair of losses drop Piedmont to 22-6 overall and with only the Maryville match counting for conference play, Piedmont falls to 8-4 in USA South play though the Lady Lions are able to hang on to their second place spot in the league's South Division.  The day also represents the first time that Piedmont volleyball has dropped more than one match in a row as Feldman's squad was 4-0 following a loss in the 2013 season up until today.
The Maryville result also now sets up a crucial South Division match with Covenant College when Piedmont next takes the floor this coming Tuesday evening.  First serve between the Scots and Lady Lions is set for 6:30 pm in the Cave on October 22nd.
