Birmingham, AL -- The Piedmont College volleyball team split its first two matches of the Hilltop Classic hosted by Birmingham Southern College this weekend picking up double digit kills from junior
Erin Krause along the way. The vereran outside hitter gave the Lady Lions ten kills on two seperate occasions as PC fell to Berry College 3-1 before defeating Rhodes College 3-1 later in the day.
In the 3-1 loss to Berry College, PC grabbed the first game 25-22 before dropping the next two games 25-22 and 25-13. In the fourth and deciding set, Piedmont held a 22-18 advantage but eventually fell to the Vikings 27-25 in a thriller in Birmingham.
Piedmont was paced offensively by
Erin Krause who grabbed ten kills followed by senior
Kalin DeMarrais who had eight. Junior
Rachel Powell posted a .444 hitting percentage with no errors while
Katheryn Knarr picked up 18 assists.
The highlight of the match against Berry came when senior libero
Jennifer Granlund picked up her 25th dig of the contest and the 1,148th of her career. That number surpassed current Lady Lions' assistant coach Jill Sparger's mark for the all-time career dig record.
In the 3-1 victory over Rhodes, it was Piedmont who again held the early advantage taking the first two games by scores of 25-16 and 25-18 respectively. After Berry swiped game three by a tight 25-22 score, PC would seize the match by claiming a 25-21 victory in game four.
Erin Krause was again amongst the offensive leaders with another ten kills while senior
Heather Stafford led the squad with 11 kills. Powell added nine more kills of her own as DeMarrais tacked on eight to help the Lady Lions claim their second victory of 2010. Freshman setter Katherine Knarr made yet another splash tallying 37 assists for the match.
Piedmont will return to action on Sunday, September 5 in the Hilltop Classic facing the host Birmingham Southern College at 1:30 before rounding out the competition with a 4:00 match against Rust College.
