Box Score vs. Peace
Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College volleyball team fell in a pair of matches this afternoon in the Cave dropping two tough 3-2 decisions to the Colonels of Centre College and the Pacers of Peace College. The losses mark the first time Piedmont has dropped two matches in one day since September 10, 2010.
In PC's match with the Colonels, only one set was decided by more than three points in a five-set classic that fell in favor of the visiting squad 3-2. After Centre claimed set number one by a 25-22 score, Piedmont would storm back to take sets two and three 25-19 and 25-23 respectively.
In set number four, the Colonels again took charge taking a tight 25-22 decision to push the match to a fifth set. Centre would once again off the Lady Lions 15-13 in the fifth and decisive set on the way to a 3-2 victory.
Senior right side hitter
Heather Stafford had her best match of the season posting 19 kills on 36 attempts for a .472 hitting percentage. The Sandy Springs native also added eight blocks while classmate
Kalin DeMarrais added 13 kills of her own to the cause.
Junior
Rachel Powell contributed 10 kills on the court while sophomore
Paige Eslinger put up another 20-plus dig performance with 23 in the match. Piedmont's freshmen setting duo
Katheryn Knarr and
Ashton Nash each posted 24 set assists a piece.
Against the Pacers, the Lady Lions fell behind early dropping each of the first two sets by a 25-23 score before rallying to take sets three and four 25-20 and 25-23 respectively. Despite battling back, Piedmont could not get the fifth and final set to fall their way falling 15-8 to drop the match 3-2.
Stafford continued to post a career day tallying 16 kills after putting down 19 in the first match against Centre earlier in the day. The senior also posted five more blocks while DeMarrais earned her seventh double-double of the seasson with 14 kills to go along with ten blocks.
Eslinger led the way defensively adding 28 digs while sophomore
Jessica Hollis earned her way to 12 digs. The freshman tandem of setters Nash and Knarr posted 19 and 18 set assists resepectively to once again guide the attack.
With the losses, the Lady Lions fell to an even 10-10 on the year. The squad will look to rebound when they travel to Great South Athletic Conference member Covenant College on Tuesday, October 12 for a 6:00 showdown.
