SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

  • Back on Sept. the 6th when the contest originally started, Davis Knight netted the first goal unassisted followed by the first career goal from freshman Josh Duquette off an assist from Mason Keith.
  • Warren Wilson fought back with a pair of goals from Jaime Millan in the 25th and 28th minute to equalize the score at 3-3.
  • That was where the score stood for nearly two weeks, before the Owls returned, only to face more weather problems.
  • The Owls returned to Demorest to complete the contest with the score tied 3-3 and 41:18 left in the second half, just over 20 minutes of game action was completed before lightning once again presented itself and play was not resumed.
  • Delroy Mattis continued his scoring run, heading home the game winner off a free kick from Tyler Vogt in the game's 59th minute.
  • Then, just after the necessary 70 minutes to make it an official game were completed, the game was halted due to lightning and not resumed with 18:34 remaining.

Recap | Box Score

  • In a scenario where the team needed some early fire, the front end of their attack was able to provide. Davis Knight, Colin Vogel, and Mason Keith all had extreme pressure in the box in the first half, utilizing their speed to their advantage as they looked for holes in the Eagles' defense.
  • The three-headed attack worked for Piedmont in the twelfth as they were able to put the game's first score in the back of the net thanks to Mason Keith. Keith, with help from Davis Knight, drove into the box and forced the Asbury keeper to try and make a last-second save. While the keeper was able to slow the momentum of Keith, the Lions' attacker was able to put enough force on the touch for the ball to roll past the line and give Piedmont a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
  • Piedmont would strike next in the 41st minute when, after a beautiful midfield transition, Colin Vogel would direct a pass in the path of Muhammed Alsuweydi as the fellow senior put enough power on the shot to fly through a deflection by the Eagle keeper. It would be the second goal of the afternoon for the Lions and for Alsuweydi, a first in his career.
  • Asbury would break through after a corner kick opportunity that flew low and found the foot of Jon Gordon after a deflection in the box as the Asbury attacker buried the ball in the upper left corner, cutting the deficit in half. The Eagles would look to press even further as they spent the second half in Lions' territory, accumulating nine shots within the half.
  • Both sides would compete and trade fouls throughout, but neither could get the right chance to truly put the game away, leading to Asbury's final attack with two minutes on the clock. The Eagles would get a pass in the box and put one past Bobby Wood, but not before the official raised his flag to call him offside. The Eagles would not be able to find another opportunity with little time on the clock, and the Lions would come away with a tenacious win.

Bobby Wood
  • The two squads matched each other in the first half. Piedmont's defense showed strength against the Blazers last time out, and in the first round against the Panthers it was no different. The Lions once again sent out a backline featuring Lyric Bratton and Boris Basic for a more defensive game and it paid off as the Panthers were only able to muster four shots faced against keeper Bobby Wood in the first half.
  • The Piedmont defense protected Wood throughout the game helping their keeper stay fresh and feeding their frontline which pressured the Panthers until their breaking point in the 67th minute. Off of an excellent service from the midfield, sophomore Juliann Pimentel and freshly selected All-CCS First Team member Davis Knight raced side-by-side before Pimentel eased a pass to Knight setting up for a thunderous strike burning past the left post and in for the game's first goal.
  • In the 87th minute, with under three minutes in the match, the Panthers set up for a long throw-in about ten yards outside Piedmont's box. LaGrange's Jacob Sagstuen leapt up to meet the ball and delivered a header to the ground that snuck past Wood, evening the score 1-1.
  • Piedmont could not rally back against the Panthers before the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime.
  • A deflection off of a LaGrange defender in the 94th minute set Piedmont up for a corner kick. The Lions filled the box, and Nico Serna readied in the far right corner for his service. The freshman lofted the ball towards the box while Lyric Bratton settled under, leapt and delivered a header past the Panther keeper, bringing home a Lion win and marking Bratton's first career goal.
