Mattis Nets Game Winner as Lions Defeat Warren Wilson 4-3

The Contest Was Shortened Due to Inclement Weather

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Piedmont 4, Warren Wilson 3
Records: Piedmont, 4-2; Warren Wilson, 1-2-1

DEMOREST, Ga. - In one of the more unique Piedmont men's soccer contests in quite some time, the Lions outlasted Warren Wilson, winning 4-3 at the Walker Athletic Complex Friday afternoon.

In a contest that began on Saturday, September 6 and was halted due to inclement weather, mother nature had more to say on Friday. As the Owls returned to Demorest to complete the contest with the score tied 3-3 and 41:18 left in the second half, just over 20 minutes of game action was completed before lightning once again presented itself and play was not resumed.

Fortunately for Piedmont, Delroy Mattis continued his scoring run, heading home the game winner off a free kick from Tyler Vogt in the game's 59th minute.

Then, just after the necessary 70 minutes to make it an official game were completed, the game was halted due to lightning and not resumed with 18:34 remaining.

All in all, just 22:44 of game time elapsed during the resumption Friday.

Time traveling back to Sept. 6, it was a goal-scoring barrage as four total goals were scored over five minutes from the 11th to the 16th minute, with three of them going Piedmont's way.

Davis Knight netted the first one unassisted followed by the first career goal from freshman Josh Duquette off an assist from Mason Keith.

After the Owls broke through with a 14th minute goal, Juliann Pimentel found the back of the net off a double assist from Colin Vogel and Knight to make it 3-1.

However, Warren Wilson fought back with a pair of goals from Jaime Millan in the 25th and 28th minute to equalize the score at 3-3.

That was where the score stood for nearly two weeks, before the Owls returned, only to face more weather problems.

Up next, the Lions will be back in action at home next Wednesday, Sept. 24 hosting Emory at 7 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
- Mattis, who did not appear in the Sept. 6 version of this contest, headed in the game winner off a free kick from Tyler Vogt.
