Season Recap: Women's Swimming

Year No. 4 for the Piedmont University women's swim program combined the first true graduating class of seniors with another impact freshman class as the program continued to reach new heights. Behind the leadership of the senior class, the Lions went on to shatter many records, dominate the regular season and take home a second straight championship title at the Independent South Conference Championships.

The Lions turned in a stellar fall season, going 5-1 in duals.

For the second year in a row, the only loss of the fall came against Sewanee, 105-172. Piedmont collected four dual wins after the loss before placing 2nd of 5 at the Igloo Invite to end the fall season. 

Starting off the spring season, Piedmont dominated Union College before falling to Berry College 113-154.

From there, Piedmont picked up two more dual wins before heading to the Independent South Conference Championships.

Head Coach Teddy Guyer was named Coach of the Year for the third year in a row and collected his 400th career win during the 2023-24 season.

CHAMPIONS: 2024 INDEPENDENT SOUTH CONFERENCE CHAMPS 

At the ISSC meet, the Lions led by just 13 points after Day One over rival Southern Virginia. The team extended their lead after Day 2 and continued to outpace the competition, winning the championship on Day 3.

Piedmont closed in dominant fashion, winning by a total of 31 points.

12 Lions earned ISSC All-Conference honors at the meet by finishing in the top five of their respective events. Of the 12 receiving honors, 11 earned recognition in multiple events while seven earned all-conference in three events.

Freshman Kelly Mashburn highlighted the meet by breaking three individual conference records while also assisting in breaking three conference relay records. Mashburn took home individual records in the 50 free (25.43), 100 free (54.95) and 200 yard free (2:01.45).

Sydney Addison, Caroline Massaro, Lauren Stone and Mashburn broke the conference record in the 400 yard free relay with a 3:52.37.

Madison Nance, Addison, Stone and Mashburn set the new conference record in the 800 yard free relay with a 8:31.05.

Freshman Olivia Smith set a new conference record in the 100 yard fly (1:05.97).

Sophomore Tressie Polk posted a 2:34.55 in the 200 yard fly, setting the new conference record.

Massaro, Nance, Polk and Mashburn swam a 1:58.21 in the 200 yard medley relay for the new conference record. 

Lizzie Arrendale, Olivia Bechtel, Maggie Bishop, Grace Kopf and Sydney Trafton rounded out the all-conference list for the Lions.

In addition to their ISSC All-Conference honors for their efforts in the pool, Olivia Bechtel, Maggi Bishop, Tressie Polk and Madison Nance also earned CSC Academic All-District recognition.
