KINGSPORT, Tenn. - The Piedmont University women's swimming program claimed the Independent South Swimming Conference Championship late Saturday night behind a strong day three performance. The Lions finished day one with a 13-point lead before narrowly extending it to 18 points after day two. On the final day of action, Piedmont secured the championship, winning by 31 points over second place Southern Virginia.
Sophomores
Caroline Massaro and
Grace Kopf went back-to-back in the first finals of the day, taking second and third in the 200 yard backstroke. Massaro recorded a 2:20.89 while Kopf turned in a 2:31.15.
In the 100 yard freestyle, freshman
Kelly Mashburn continued to come up big for the Lions, taking home third place (54.95). Fellow freshman
Sydney Addison also secured points in the event, swimming a 58.80 for fifth.
Freshman
Sydney Trafton grabbed fourth place in the 200 yard breaststroke with a final time of 2:49.36, narrowly holding off the fifth place challenger by just .10 seconds.
In one of the most significant point grabs of the day, Piedmont secured second, third, fourth and sixth in the 200 yard butterfly. Sophomore

Olivia Bechtel placed fourth (2:39.62) and freshman
Olivia Smith placed sixth (3:01.59).
In the final event of the meet, Piedmont's team of Mashburn, Addison, Massaro and senior
Lauren Stone placed second in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:52.37. The Lions' efforts in the final events secured the 2024 Independent South Swimming Conference Championship.
