Women's Lacrosse Fights Hard in Second OT of USA South Championship but Falls 15-14 to Meredith

The Lady Lions finished the regular season in first place and made it to the final game of the 2014 USA South Women's Lacrosse Tournament Championship barely losing out to Meredith, 15-14. 5 Lady Lions were named to the All-Tourney team.
Box Score Rocky Mount, NC — The Lady Lions and Avenging Angels fought fiercely for the 2014 USA South Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament. The lead changed back-and-forth in agonizing fashion for fans with both teams working their hardest. After two periods of regulation and two overtime periods though, Meredith came out on top 15-14.

The Lady Lions finish their 2014 season as the runner-up in the tournament with five spots on the 2014 USA South Women's Lacrosse All-Tourney team. Attacker Mckynsey Douglas, midfielders Maggie McDaniel and Megan McDowell, defender Elaine Rossignol, and goalkeeper Carly Haraka.

While the Lady Lions started off shooting early, it was Meredith that scored first, seven minutes into play. As usual though, the Lady Lions were quick to answer with a free position goal by Maggie McDaniel less than thirty seconds later. Meredith then took the lead back with a set of three goals in the next five minutes.

After a short timeout to adjust their game plan, Piedmont came back and goalkeeper Carly Haraka immediately made a great save. The clear was good and on the counter attack Mckynsey Douglas earned a free position shot. She took advantage and scored her first goal of the match. Just over a minute later, McDaniel turned over a ball and moved it forward to Jenine Brideau. Brideau swung the ball over to Megan McDowell who converted a shot to bring the Lady Lions within one of Meredith.

Piedmont turned up the pressure with more shots by Alexis Narducci and Douglas. Narducci found a golden opportunity under thirteen minutes to play in the half and scored on an assist by Cahner Manns to tie up the game at four apiece. Meredith took the lead back a few minutes later, but Piedmont evened it on a Cahner Manns free position goal.

With five minutes remaining, McDaniel scored on a Brideau assist giving Piedmont a two-goal lead. The lead came in handy when Meredith scored another goal 2 minutes later. Both teams were not willing to let up the offensive pressure going into the last two minutes of play. Megan McDowell scored on a Douglas assist and Kayla Jones followed up moments later with her first goal of the match and Piedmont's ninth under a minute left in the first half. While Piedmont held the lead, Meredith cut it down just before half with their seventh goal. Piedmont led several statistics at halftime with thirteen shots on goal to Meredith's ten, and the Lady Lions notched ten of the seventeen draw controls.

The second half started off with adversity for the Lady Lions as Meredith tallied a trio of goals in the first five minutes. Piedmont finally turned the lead around again with a Cahner Manns-assisted Alexis Narducci goal eight minutes into the half. With the help of several more great saves by Carly Haraka in the goal, the Lady Lions improved their odds thanks to another goal—this time by Megan McDowell twelve minutes into the half. Piedmont put a few more shots on goal in the next five minutes, but it was Meredith who struck next, tying up the game 11-11 with fifteen minutes to play.

Time continued to wind down in the fierce battle for the USA South Conference 2014 Tournament title with both teams even at twenty-four shots apiece under twelve minutes left in the match. Haraka continued to make great saves, but the Avenging Angels were picking up steam on offense and notched two goals under nine minutes and again at six minutes left to play taking a 13-11 lead over Piedmont. Mckynsey Douglas, who led yesterday's game in scoring with six to her name, was the top shooter today and she added a third goal with four minutes to play.

As Meredith scrambled to maintain their lead under one minute to play, Piedmont's Maggie McDaniel earned a free position goal. With deft accuracy, she scored and tied the game 13-13 under thirty seconds left in regulation. Nothing more could be done by either team as the clock quickly ran out and the teams huddled together before the first overtime period in the USA South 2014 Women's Lacrosse Conference Tournament Final.

Piedmont and Meredith now entered the first of two three minute overtime periods. Play started and while Meredith earned the draw control, Mckynsey Douglas caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball moving the ball into the offensive third. Douglas held posession and earned a golden opportunity of a free position attempt under a minute left in the period. The attacker readied herself and on the whistle rocketed a shot for the 14-13 lead at the end of the first overtime period. In the second overtime period, Meredith grabbed the draw control and quickly scored a goal to even the score and force Piedmont to fight back.

Meredith called a timeout, giving both teams a chance to assess the situation before the final two minutes of play. The crowd was in awe of the series of events that took place in the final thirty seconds of play. Meredith earned a free position attempt and scored to take a lead that was sure to stick. Maggie McDaniel snatched the ground ball on the next draw control, swung it to Alexis Narducci and Narducci fired a shot to score with seconds left on the clock, but in a wild twist it the officials disallowed the goal due to a failed stick check. The Lady Lions were distraught and the clock wound down with the Meredith taking the 15-14 win and 2014 Women's Lacrosse Conference Tournament Title.

The Lady Lions finish their season with the runner-up position in the USA South Women's Lacrosse Tournament. While not their final aspiration they improved from last year's performance and in only their second season of competition, proved themselves a capable contender in the USA South. Piedmont's final record in 2014 is 14-3 overall after they went 8-0 in the USA South regular season winning the regular season title.
