RALEIGH, N.C. - The Piedmont women's lacrosse team used a second-half surge to defeat Methodist 12-5, to advance to the USA South finals.
Despite a slow start in the first quarter, the Lions rallied after halftime to oust their competition.
The Monarchs leapt out to an early lead in the first quarter, scoring three and shutting out the Lions.
Piedmont hardened its offensive approach and fought back in the second quarter of play. The scoring started with senior Clara Welch, launching a goal with the Lions in a man-up opportunity. From there the Piedmont offense woke up and found its stride. Lovette Choloh scored the next goal before Welch capped the quarter with another goal, tying the game going into halftime.
Coming out of the half, Piedmont opened the floodgates, with Savannah Limehouse, Welch, and Choloh all scoring in the first five minutes. The onslaught didn't stop there as Piedmont found the back of the net three more times in the quarter, with Choloh scoring her fourth of the day to close out the frame.
Piedmont's defense, despite a shaky first quarter, befuddled its opponent, causing 13 turnovers while feeding the attack, going 17-18 on clear attempts.
In the fourth quarter, the Lions put the Monarchs away with three more goals, two of which were scored by Welch and one by Choloh.
The Lions offense took a quarter to score their first goal but did not look back from there.
Next, the Lions will face the No. 1-seeded Meredith Avenging Angels in the USA South Finals.

- Welch and Choloh led the Lions in goals on the day, with both scoring five on the day.
