Box Score Huntingdon, AL — In a show of prowess, the Piedmont's Lady Lion Lacrosse team defeated Huntingdon College 19-6, collecting the USA South Conference regular season title in the process with an 8-0 record against conference opponents. Piedmont held the Hawks to just three goals per period today while outshooting the host team 39-29.
Scoring started off early with Piedmont leaping ahead of the Hawks.
Cahner Manns snagged a ground ball and then after a quick one-two pass with
Maggie McDaniel the midfielder scored the first goal of the match and one of three to her name after the match; she also grabbed ten ground balls. The two teams then battled it out on both halves of the field for several minutes. After goalkeeper
Carly Haraka made a dramatic free position save, the Lady Lions counter-attacked with a score by
Kayla Jones assisted by
Mckynsey Douglas. The Lady Lions continued to push again and
Alexis Narducci scored thanks to a
Megan McDowell assist just two minutes later after Haraka made another great save.
The Hawks finally earned their first goal of the match at 20:19 remaining in the half but celebrations were muted quickly by a
Mckynsey Douglas free position goal twenty seconds later. McDowell and Douglas each added a swift goal at the sixteen minute mark before the Hawks scored two of their own on free position attempts a minute later – the score now read 6-3, advantage Piedmont.
After a few more moments of play,
Megan McDowell earned a free position attempt and made quick work of it, scoring sweetly. Minutes passed at this point and Haraka stood defiant of many Hawk offensive efforts with a number of great saves added to her name. As the clock wound down in the half, Piedmont finally turned up the heat offensively as they often do.
Megan McDowell led the charge with a solo goal under six minutes to play. Then
Samantha Vanover notched a score on a
Julianna Surgent assist. Vanover then obliged a Douglas goal with an assist of her own. The final peg on the scoreboard came at a minute remaining when freshman
Julianna Surgent snagged a ground ball in the offensive third, deftly beat a group of opponents and scored her first goal of the match. The Lions held an 11-3 lead as the halftime buzzer rang.
In the first five minutes of the second half, Huntingdon held possession and put shots on goal, but Haraka would not concede another goal just yet. The tide turned with another
Kayla Jones goal at 25:33; once again assisted by
Mckynsey Douglas. Several minutes later,
Cahner Manns and
Megan McDowell both notched another goal on the scoresheet to improve Piedmont's lead to 14-3 with twenty minutes left to play. While Huntingdon would score two goals in the next ten minutes, the Lady Lions trumped them with a trio of scores. Manns led the way with her third and final goal.
Mckynsey Douglas then scored a quick goal just after McDaniel won the draw control. The third goal was another solo score by
Julianna Surgent, her final score of the match.
Freshman keeper
Blake Forrest made an appearance in goal for the final ten minutes. While the Hawks were able to score a goal with five minutes to play, the Lady Lions countered with two by
Jenna Smith in the same time period and a buzzer-beating save by Forrest to complete the victory, 19-6.
