Women's Lacrosse Drops 16-14 Nail-biter at Centre College

Freshman #19 Kayla Jones was the points leader in the loss with six goals and a pair of assists.
Box Score Danville, KY — The lead changed multiple times in the Lady Lions match today at Centre College. Unfortunately the final score was not in their favor as Piedmont fell 16-14 to the regional opponent.

The game started off on the right foot for Piedmont with Maggie McDaniel one-two passing with Kayla Jones# around the Centre defense and then shooting and scoring the first goal of the match.  Two minutes later the Colonels slipped in a tyling goal, but it was followed by a Cahner Manns free position goal at 25:17. Unfortunately, Centre then added four more goals allowing only a goal by Jones in the mix to tide the scoring spree.

Mckynsey Douglas finally found her shot under sixteen minutes to play in the half scoring two goals but Centre notched two of their own in between her scores. The Lady Lions picked up their offensive pace in the final ten minutes of play and Kayla Jones would score three strong goals in the final minutes of play reversing the momentum and giving Piedmont hope with an 8-8 score at halftime.

Starting off the second half of play, goalkeeper Carly Haraka made an excited save that led to a quick counter attack. Maggie McDaniel moved the ball upfield and slipped in to Kayla Jones. Jones found the opening and just over 10 seconds after Haraka's save, Piedmont held a 9-8 lead.

Try as they might for the next fifteen minutes, the Lady Lions couldn't hold off an on-point Centre offense. The Colonels put in five goals before Piedmont finally stemmed the flow with goals by Cahner Manns and Kayla Jones just past the midway point in the final half of play. Centre and Piedmont then went back and forth scoring three goals a piece in the final 10 minutes of play. Maggie McDaniel scored the first and last goal split by a Jenine Brideau goal but with the three Colonel goals the score was set in their favor and Piedmont reached the final buzzer behind, 16-14.

Carly Haraka played the entire match in goal gathering 25 saves earning the loss on the final three goals. Piedmont moves to 11-2 overall with just a pair of games remaining in the regular season. The Lady Lions will host regional opponent Berry College on March 26th at 7:00 pm before heading to Huntingdon College on March 29th for their final regular season and USA South conference match at 1:00 pm EST.
