Women's Lacrosse Overwhelms N.C. Wesleyan 22-5 in USA South Contest

Freshman #2 Julianna Surgent was a strong asset in the Lady Lions victory against the N.C. Wesleyan Battling Bishops scoring three goals and assisting two.
Box Score Rocky Mount, N.C.  Piedmont Women's Lacrosse increased their USA South conference record to a perfect 6-0 with today's 22-5 defeat of the N.C. Wesleyan Battling Bishops. As is often the case, a bevy of Lady Lions added points to the board in the heavy-scoring victory with four players – Mckynsey Douglas, Kayla Jones, Marisa Register, and Julianna Surgent – adding three goals a piece.

In the first five minutes of play, it was a Piedmont tour de force of scoring with six goals in rapid succession. Freshman Julianna Surgent was the first to score twelve seconds into play. Her goal was quickly followed by a Mckynsey Douglas goal; both assisted by Megan McDowell. In the second minute of play the two would once again grab a goal each followed by a Kayla Jones score. Surgent assisted the latter pair of goals. Douglas and McDowell then worked hard in the midfield causing turnovers with the latter player giving an assist to Surgent's third goal at 26:14 left in the half.

N.C. Wesleyan finally put a point of their own on the board at 26:03 but it was answered with five more Piedmont goals in the same amount of minutes. Jones scored two while Maggie McDaniel, Douglas, and McDowell each added one for the 11-1 lead in the first ten minutes of play. Cahner Manns and Jenna Smith each scored in the next few minutes followed by another goal by McDaniel. With the 14-1 lead, freshman goalkeeper Blake Forrest took over for Haraka in the defense and would gather experience there for the rest of the game.

While the Battling Bishops would gather another goal late in the half, it was only to slow the downpour of Piedmont goals. Defender Tiffany Slaughter scored her first career goal as a Lady Lion. The final two goals of the half came from freshmen Jenine Brideau and Jenna Smith to give Piedmont a solid 17-2 halftime lead.

The second half opened up as the first did with a quick goal this time by freshman Marisa Register. Several minutes later Morgan McCalla added a goal of her own to the tally. The Battling Bishops held off an offensive by the Lady Lions for the next few minutes, but by 18:28 Register was in position to score again and score she did. N.C. Wesleyan countered with their third goal at 15:53 left in the game.

Register would get her third goal of the game at 8:01 remaining on a McDaniel assist and then Elaine Rossignol found an opening to get her sole goal of the game and second this season. N.C. Wesleyan scored two more before the final buzzer but came nowhere close to Piedmont and the 22-5 final score.

Piedmont is now a perfect 6-0 against USA South opponents and improves to 9-1 overall. They will host their penultimate conference opponent, LaGrange College, this Wednesday, March 19th at 6:00 PM. Live statistics and a video broadcast will be available for fans unable to make the match.
