Box Score Demorest, GA — After a tough first half that saw the Lady Lions barely ahead at Meredith College, Piedmont made a stand in the second half and snatched a 15-11 victory over USA South conference opponent Meredith.
The Lady Lions started off the match with the offensive advantage causing a couple turnovers before
Mckynsey Douglas and
Cahner Manns scored the first two goals of the match. Goal two was Manns' only points of the day while Douglas' goal was her first of five.
It was only moments later though that Meredith scored a pair of their own to tie it up – the first of several lead changes on the day. Piedmont, not one to fall behind, quickly put in a third goal thanks to a hard shot by Douglas assisted by
Kayla Jones.
On a man-up opportunity at 19:37 left, Jones took a chance of her own on the attack and grabbed a goal for the 4-2 lead but just as before, the Avenging Angels came back and tied it up with a pair of goals in the next five minutes.
The next few minutes of play were a series of turnovers caused by each team's defense.
Ashtin Thomas caused an important turnover at 10:02 that led to
Alexis Narducci's first goal of the match thirty seconds later. Meredith attempted a quick rebound goal but
Carly Haraka proved her worth in the goal, making a pair of great saves.
In the final two minutes of first half play, both teams scored with Narducci notching hers first. The scoreboard read 6-5 advantage Piedmont going into halftime intermission.
Meredith surely had a rousing halftime speech from their coach as they set the tone in the second half with three straight goals in five minutes to take the lead from the Lady Lions. Piedmont answered with four goals in quick succession to quiet the home crowd.
Kayla Jones and
Jenine Brideau each grabbed a score while
Alexis Narducci locked in her third and fourth goals in the match. Jones assisted Brideau's goal while junior midfielder
Maggie McDaniel earned three points assisting the others.
Both teams continued to work hard offensively with back-and-forth scoring for the next few minutes. Jones scored on a free position following a Meredith goal while
Samantha Vanover had a man-up score at 14:43 remaining after another Meredith goal for the 12-10 lead.
Piedmont finally began to hit their stride halfway through the second half.
Mckynsey Douglas spruced up her resume with two more goals in rapid succession answered by a single Meredith score. As the clock ticked past five minutes remaining, Douglas earned another free position and with an agile move and shot, scored the fifteen Piedmont goal of the game and her fifth.
Meredith attempted to fight back but the Piedmont defense caused turnovers on nearly every offensive possession by the Avenging Angels in the final minutes of the game. The score was set at 15-11 when the clock hit zero.
Piedmont's Women's Lacrosse team is now 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the USA South after their eighth victory in a row. Piedmont makes a short trip to Rocky Mount, NC tomorrow to play conference opponent N.C. Wesleyan at 12:00 PM.
