Lady Lions Overwhelm Ferrum 11-9 in USA South Matchup

Sophomore Cahner Manns helped the Lady Lions to a victory with 5 draw controls, a goal, and an assist.
Box Score Demorest, GA — In an exciting morning match between the Lady Lions and Panthers of Ferrum College, Piedmont took advantage of two first half unanswered goals to seal the 11-9 USA South Conference victory. Alexis Narducci led the Lady Lions with four goals in the win.

In a half that saw 17 shots by Piedmont, it was no surprise they started scoring early. Under two minutes into the match, Maggie McDaniel scored the first goal of the match thanks to an assist by Mckynsey Douglas.

After the goal, both teams traded shots but both goalies also made the save. At 25:57 left in the half, Cahner Manns scored her sole goal of the match on a free position shot. Shortly after, Kayla Jones found an opening and assisted a Megan McDowell goal to give Piedmont a 3-0 lead.

Ferrum scored their first goal of the game under 18 minutes left in the half on a man-up free position. Alexis Narducci answered several minutes later though with her first goal of the match.

Maggie McDaniel and McDowell each added goals minutes later while Ferrum scored a single goal in between the two. The Lady Lions continued the offensive until Ferrum scored with 8:44 left in the half.

In the final five minutes of play, Ferrum made an offensive rush, scoring two to bring the score within one at 6-5. Piedmont wouldn't allow such a close score though, with McDaniel notching her second goal and the final goal of the half at 2:30 left. The Lady Lions went into halftime with a 7-5 lead, outshooting the Panthers 17-9.

Sophomore Carly Haraka continued her charge in the Piedmont goal in the second half after making a pair of great saves in the previous half. Her skills came in handy with a strong save at 26:43 left in the half. After the save, defender Ashtin Thomas forced a turnover. Narducci picked up the groundball and made a break for the Panthers goal. Without hesitation, the sophomore attacker slid the ball past the goalkeeper for the 8-5 Piedmont lead.

At 20 minutes remaining, Myckensey Douglas earned a great free position goal but it was quickly answered by a Panthers goal. Not to be forgotten about, Narducci led another charge scoring on a Kayla Jones assist. A few minutes later Ferrum found another goal but the score was still in Piedmont's favor, 10-7.

With 13:04 remaining, Alexis Narducci was fouled earning a free position attempt. The attacker wound up and slammed a ball past the Panthers keeper for the 11th and final Piedmont goal.

Ferrum would score two more before the end of the match but not enough to usurp a more powerful Piedmont crew. The first half gave Piedmont the advantage they needed after Ferrum tied the Lions in scoring and shooting during the second half. Haraka earned another win in the goal with five saves on the day.

The Lions move to 4-1 overall with the win and hold a clean 2-0 sheet in the USA South Conference. Piedmont will host another conference match tomorrow afternoon when Greensboro College visits for a 1:00 PM match.
