Box Score Atlanta, GA -- The Piedmont Women's Lacrosse team came away from Oglethorpe University with a dominating 21-2 victory this afternoon. Twelve Lady Lions went to work on the offensive scoring barrage, with
Mckynsey Douglas's four to lead the way.
The Lady Lions put things together quickly, winning the first draw control. Taking advantage of a free position moments later,
Mckynsey Douglas scored her first of 4 goals. Piedmont took the second draw control in a row and two shots were put on frame by
Megan McDowell and
Alexis Narducci. Oglethorpe's clear attempt went awry and the Lions earned goal number two, courtesy of freshman
Kayla Jones, her first collegiate score for the Lady Lions but not the last on the day.
The game quickly became a matter of minutes with a goal being scored nearly every minute. Douglas and Narducci each notched a score before five minutes elapsed in the first half, giving Piedmont a 4-0 lead. Three minutes later, Narducci had earned a second goal, freshman
Jenna Smith tallied her first goal of the match, and Douglas tossed a third zinger into the back of the Oglethorpe cage.
It wasn't a one-sided game though, as Oglethorpe put two shots on the scoreboard.
Carly Haraka came up big making a save on the first before the second soared wide.
Jenna Smith picked up the ground ball and after making her way down field swiftly, earned an assist on a Narducci goal to give Piedmont a 8-0 lead.
Oglethorpe were not out of the game yet, proving themselves capable with a goal of their own midway into the first half to spoil any hopes of a Piedmont shutout. Freshman attacker
Julianna Surgent answered with a Piedmont goal two minutes later for the 9-1 lead.
Haraka notched another save with 12:06 to go and a stalemate settled in for a few minutes. Unfortunately, it was broken by Oglethorpe with their second and final goal at the 9:24 mark in the first half. Before the halftime horn went off, the scored jumped up two more places in favor of Piedmont with
Elaine Rossignol and
Morgan McCalla the shooters. Coach Jacquette's Lady Lions took an 11-2 lead going into the halftime intermission.
Freshman goalkeeper
Blake Forrest found her place between the pipes for the first time in her Piedmont career in the second half. The Lady Lions defense did their work and kept her safe as the minutes passed.
At 25:28, Surgent notched her second goal of the match on a McCalla assist.
Cahner Manns quickly won the draw control and tallied a shot on goal.
Kayla Jones grabbed a rebounded save and put the ball away for good scoring another goal on the day. It wasn't a minute later that the scored jumped again in Piedmont's favor, this time for a
Marisa Register goal.
Forrest faced a tough challenge with nineteen minutes to go when a foul allowed the Stormy Petrels a free position shot. The freshman keeper came up big though, making the save smartly.
Halfway into the second half,
Alexis Narducci took advantage of a failed Oglethorpe clear, assisting a third
Kayla Jones goal and giving the Lady Lions a 15-2 lead.
Mckynsey Douglas and
Maggie McDaniel continued the scoring run minutes later with goals of their own.
After causing a turnover at 10:10 left in the match, defender
Ashtin Thomas made her way up the field. Finding the perfect opportunity, Thomas swung hard and hit net for her first collegiate goal and the 18-2 lead. With time winding down in the second half, Manns,
Megan McDowell, and McCalla filled in the final three goals of the match giving Piedmont their 21-2 final score at the horn.
The Lady Lions combined to outshoot the Stormy Petrels 48-8 in the bout. Haraka made two saves while giving up two goals in the first half and Forrest made a single save to shutout the opponent in the second half.
