Box Score Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont Women's Lacrosse team played well in their opener at home today but it wasn't enough to overcome an early lead by the visiting Tigers of Sewanee. Four different Lady Lions scored in today's loss with sophomore Mckynsey Douglas tallying six in her first match as a Lady Lion to lead the way.

Sewanee started off the match picking up the first draw control, but it was quickly overturned several times in the following minute. Both teams used the next few minutes as a chance to see what each other had before Sewanee earned a free position and took the first shot of the match. Carly Haraka checked her pipes and made her first save of the season after the whistle blew.

The crowd's cheers were short-lived though as Sewanee found another chance on frame minutes later and hit the first goal of the game five minutes in to go up 1-0 over Piedmont. Less than a minute after the Sewanee goal, Piedmont's Maggie McDaniel nailed her first goal of the season off of a free position attempt to tie up the scoreboard. In the next 10 minutes, the visitors found their stride at the expense of Piedmont, scoring four more goals to only a single Piedmont goal by freshmen Jenna Smith, her first collegiate goal and one of three on the day.

With the score 5-2 advantage Sewanee, Smith scored her second goal of the game halfway into the first half on a free position attempt. For the following ten minutes the score would remain 5-3 while Sewanee saved a number of tough Piedmont shots on goal.

At 4:00 left in the half, Alexis Narducci found her stride and scored a smart goal to bring the score within one. It wasn't enough though as the Tigers found three more goals before the halftime whistle. Into halftime with an 8-4 deficit, the Lady Lions were also trailing 15-11 on shots.

In the second half, Sewanee once again came out ready to play, scoring three in five minutes before Piedmont's Douglas could find the net on a free position attempt. After a Tigers turnover at 22:00, Douglas quickly converted another shot into a goal for the Lions after a great assist by Maggie McDaniel. Kayla Jones snuck a ball through the defense a few minutes later to give JENNA SMITH another goal, drawing the deficit to 11-7 with eighteen minutes left to play.

Try as they might, the Lady Lions couldn't hold off a fast Sewanee offense, giving up the a trio of goals in the next six minutes. Mckynsey Douglas made a valiant effort at a comeback before the ten minute mark. The attacker nailed three goals to a single by Sewanee to gather a 15-10 deficit. Narducci followed up with a shot on goal, picking up the rebounded save and scoring on the second shot a minute later to bring the score within four.

With the last five minutes of play, Sewanee found their 16th goal but several more chances were saved by Carly Haraka in the goal. Douglas scored Piedmont's final goal of the match and her sixth with just four minutes left. As the final buzzer sounded the final score read Sewanee 16, Piedmont 12.

The Lady Lions gave up four unanswered goals in the first half that cost them the match today. Piedmont was even on goals (8) and shots (15) with Sewanee in the second half. Haraka made a valiant effort in the goal, saving 11.

Piedmont is now 0-1 overall after losing the season opener. Their next match will be a short trip to Oglethorpe University on February 19th for 6:00 PM start.
