Box Score Demorest - On a rainy morning at Walker Field on the Campus of Piedmont College, the Lady Lions Lacrosse team received their first defeat of the inaugural season from USA South conference opponent Greensboro College by a score of 11-4. The Lady Lions were held to two goals per period in the USA South match.
The Lady Lions came out confident as always with the first two shots on goal five minutes in by
Megan McDowell and
Kayla Freund; the first nicking a pipe and the second saved by Greensboro's Hemstock. Minutes later, a shot by freshman
Alexis Narducci went wide but a subsequent turnover by Piedmont allowed the Greensboro Pride to capitalize and put the first goal on the scoreboard.
In the next eight minutes, the Pride held control scoring two more on the Lady Lions. McDowell took a chance on a breakaway though, and put the first goal on the Lady Lions scoresheet with a strong shot midway through the first half. The Pride and Lady Lions each added another goal each in the next five minutes by Greensboro's Fedun and Freund of the Lady Lions. In the last three minutes, the Pride took advantage of Piedmont fouls to score two more and the half ended 2-6 in favor of Greensboro after a dangerous check by Piedmont's
Samantha Vanover.
At the end of the first, the Lady Lions were held to nine shots against eleven by the Pride and had were nearly even on turnovers, 11-10.
In second half play, Greensboro came out fast once again. On seven shots, the Pride capitalized thrice, increasing the Lady Lions deficit to 2-9.
MEGAN MCDOWELL again took advantage of the Pride misfortune by scoring with a man up after a Greensboro yellow card. Goalkeeper
Carly Haraka kept the Lions in the game by saving a well-taken eight meter shot.
The last fifteen minutes saw more scoring action on both sides. After a Pride goal,
Maggie McDaniel gave the Lady Lions their second and final goal of the second half on a counter attack. The Pride put up two more goals after to seal Piedmont's fate.
Haraka kept the defense steady on the day with seven saves. McDowell led the offensive with two goals on eight shots.
With their first loss of the season, the Lady Lions move to 9-1 overall and 3-1 in the USA South. Their next match is tomorrow in a conference bout with Ferrum College at 11:00 am.
