Box Score 2 Greensboro, NC - The Piedmont College volleyball team has continued its winning ways in 2013 with a pair of victories in USA South action earlier this afternoon knocking off Greensboro College before defeating Mary Baldwin College later in the day. PC defeated the host Pride of Greensboro 3-1 in a four-set affair before taking down Mary Baldwin in straight sets just two hours later.
In PC's first contest of the day, Greensboro College put up a good fight against the Lady Lions who had won 14 of their last 15 matches coming into the Saturday of action. Piedmont took the first set 25-18 with ease before having to win in tie-break fashion in the second set 28-26. Greensboro then took the third in extra points 26-24 to stay alive in the match. However, PC closed out the win in the fourth with a 25-19 decision to take the match by a 3-1 overall score.
Leading the way at the net was newcomer
Katelyn Dobbs who had a season high 13 kills against the Pride, the best performance of her young Lady Lion career in terms of total kills. Dobbs accounted for more than 13 of her team's points in the victory as well with her .429 hitting percentage representing the fourth best of her season with her top mark coming in that category during the Lady Lions' last match with Greensboro, a 3-0 win on September 14 earlier this year.
Also having a career performance was youngster
Amanda Trotter as the freshman hit better than .530 with her eight kills on 15 attempts. Trotter never committed an error on the attack and added a block assist to her effort against Greensboro.
After defeating the host team, Piedmont took care of Mary Baldwin College, another USA South opponent, in straight sets winning 25-7, 25-13, and 25-12. PC twice held Mary Baldwin to hitting percentages lower than .050 as a team and never allowed double digit kills to the Fighting Squirrels in any of the three sets.
The highlight of the encore match for PC came from senior
Ashley Fannon who tallied five service aces, a season high for the veteran hitter whose previous peak was a pair of aces against Covenant on September 24th. Fannon also hit .750 in the match as well tallying three kills on her four total attempts without an error in the match.
Two Lady Lions tied for the lead in kills with
Amanda Trotter and
Jenna Hoffman each tabbing seven. Trotter's totals came on 12 total attempts as she hit .583 against MBC while Hoffman got hers on 16 attempts swinging .375.
Sophomore
Xandy Green was the team's assist leader on the day with 33 in the pair of matches while veteran
Katheryn Knarr posted 22 against Greensboro. Youngster
Heather LaPrade added eight against the Fighting Squirrels.
Defensively,
Katie Faith was once again the leader with the libero tallying 23 digs against Greensboro alone, her 7th straight match with at least 21 digs or more. That streak would later end against Mary Baldwin as Faith needed only six digs to pace the team in a match where much of the action was offensive for PC.
Piedmont's two wins move the squad to 5-1 in conference play, second behind only Maryville in the South Division of the conference. The Lady Lions are now 18-2 overall, their best 20-game start in the NCAA era which began in 2003. Piedmont will get back on the court on Wednesday evening when they play host to NCAA Division II member North Greenville University. The October 9th contest is set for a 6:00 pm first serve in Cave Arena.
