Lions Finish Third at West Pines Collegiate

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. - Piedmont men's golf held steady in the West Pines Collegiate final round Tuesday, taking third place against a strong field with a consistent showing in Douglasville, Georgia.

The Lions were consistent across the board, with all five players carding scores between 71 and 75. Overall, the team finished 8-over in the final round and 15-over for the 54-hole tournament.

Doug Gugel banked a solo fifth place finish, his best individual finish outside of the 2024 and 2025 CCS Championship. It was three solid rounds stacked together for Gugel, who delivered a final round of even par 71 after delivering rounds of 72 and 70 on Monday.

Gugel led the Lions with six total birdies, bouncing back from a rough stretch on the opening nine. He began the day with a birdie at the first before playing the next four holes in 4-over par. However, he bounced back with three consecutive birdies on holes 6-8 and settled in for an even par back nine that included a pair of birdies and a pair of bogeys for his even par 71.

Remo Scholl was the biggest mover on the leaderboard for the Lions, as he fired another sensational round of 1-over 72 to jump up 13 spots and finish in a tie for 13th on the individual leaderboard. He closed strong, with a birdie on the par-5 17th to help the Lions hold off Oglethorpe and Southern Virginia by a single stroke.

After leading the Lions with two par-or-better rounds on Monday, Adam Rogers delivered a 3-over 74, finishing on a high note with back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18.

Jacob DeJesus was second on the team with five birdies in the final round on his way to a 4-over 75.

Freshman Braden Kiley also carded a 4-over 75 to close out the event.

Piedmont finished behind only two schools on the team leaderboard, as Rhodes took the team title by nine shots over second place Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Up next, the Lions will take their talents to Florida, with the Golfweek DIII Fall Invitational set to begin this Sunday, Oct. 12 in Destin, Florida.

The final round will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start tomorrow morning.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- As a team, the Lions totaled 18 birdies, led by six from Gugel and five from DeJesus. Each player made at least two on the day.
- All five Lions made birdie on the par-5 17th to help them hold onto a solo third place finish.
