TALLULAH FALLS, Ga. - The Piedmont University men's swimming team dominated their senior day double dual against Warren Wilson and Columbia, winning every single event at the meet.
The Lions started the meet with the 200 yard medley relay where
Murphy O'Brien,
Erick Fortner,
Luke Borgmann and
Alex Pangelinan narrowly bested another Piedmont squad for first place. Their time of 1.41.44 proved to be just over a second faster than the next relay squad.
In the 100 yard IM, senior
Jon Brown grabbed the win, being the only swimmer to post a sub-one minute time (58.76).
Freshman
Perry Westbrook continued his quality performances in the 200 yard freestyle, turning in a first place time of 1:53.04. He also went on to claim the 100 yard freestyle with a 50.62 later in the meet.
The 100 yard backstroke proved to be one of the closest races of the day, with Fortner's time (57.65) being just .53 seconds faster than fellow Lion
Obed Miranda (58.08). Miranda went on later in meet to get his wins, taking first place in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:03.50) and the 200 yard IM (2:12.92).
Ross Coppedge secured his senior day win in the 50 yard breaststroke (28.58), holding off a Columbia challenger by .44 seconds. He continued his winning ways later on in the meet, this time laying claim to the 50 yard freestyle. His 23.08 proved to be .5 seconds faster than the swimmer from Columbia.
In the 100 yard butterfly, Borgmann held off
Josh Martinez by under two seconds to claim the win. Borgmann turned in a time of 56.16 while Martinez recorded a 58.36. Later on, Borgmann once again held off a teammate in the 50 yard butterfly, taking the win in 24.66.
Freshman
Reid Barnes picked up the win in the 50 yard backstroke, touching in 27.67. Senior
Zane Morgan placed directly behind him with a 29.00.
Piedmont also claimed the win in the 500 yard with
Leandro Forero swimming a 5:20.46 while
Matthew Luther placed second with a 5:26.64.
In the final event of the day, Fortner, Forero, Pangelinan, and O'Brien turned in a 1:32.46 for the win, holding off
Sam Teed, Brown, Borgmann and Coppedge by just .53 seconds (1:32.99).
The Lions have just one meet left before the Conference Championships and are back in action Saturday, January 27th at Point University.
