ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Piedmont University's swimming teams swept dual action yet again on Saturday to wrap up another stellar regular season for both programs.
With a pair of wins over William Peace and Warren Wilson this weekend, the Piedmont men finished the regular season a perfect 6-0 in dual meets to remain undefeated through the first two years of the program.
The women's team ends the year 8-1 in dual action with the Lions' only loss coming to Brenau, a scholarship program. Through two seasons, the Piedmont women are 12-2 in dual meets.
"This was a great team win," said head coach Teddy Guyer. "We went into this meet very tired from all the intense training over the last few weeks preparing for conference. We knew times would not be good, but the team gave me all they had to pull out the wins."
Pulling out the win is exactly what the Piedmont men had to do late versus William Peace as they two sides went into the final race, the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, in a must-win situation.
The Lions put down a race-winning of time of 1:37.90 to out-duel the Pacers as
AUSTIN O'BRIEN,
MATTHEW LUTHER,
KYLE RUTBERG, and
ZANE MORGAN did their part in preserving their team's undefeated dual record.
O'Brien helped out earlier in the meet as well with his victory in the 100 Yard Backstroke event, laying down the only sub-minute time of the race at 59.62.
ROSS COPPEDGE contributed to the cause earlier in the day as well, taking the top spot of each the 50 and 100 Yard Freestyle races.
The Piedmont women didn't have to fight and claw to the finish quite like the men did as they cruised to a trio of victories on Saturday.
MADISON NANCE led the charge with three victories all to her own as she earned the win in each the 50 and 100 Yard Breaststroke events before also taking the top spot in the 200 Yard Individual Medley. Nance's IM time of 2:25.40 was over eight seconds faster than the second-place time from William peace's Jasseli Gutierrez.
GWYNETH THOMAS helped get the day started on a high note for the Lady Lions as she served as the first leg of the 200 Yard Medley Relay that gave herself,
ASHLEY PUGH,
OLIVIA BECHTEL, and
LIZZIE ARRENDALE a relay win to start the meet.
Thomas would go on to capture individual wins in each the 50 and 100 Yard Backstroke events as well.
The Lions will get an important week of rest as they begin preparations for their Independent South conference meet on Thursday, February 17-Saturday, February 19 in Cary, North Carolina.
