SWEET BRIAR, Va. - The Piedmont women's tennis team competed over the weekend at The Battle of the Blue Ridge, a two-day tournament style event in Sweet Briar, Virginia.
The Lady Lions competed in singles and doubles competition against players from Sweet Briar, Brevard, Methodist, Lynchburg and Shenandoah.
Overall, 19 athletes played a total of 19 doubles matches and 30 singles matches over the two days.
Doubles action was highlighted by newcomers
LEXIE WASHBURN and
ANNA LASSITER finishing second in their draw after picking up an 8-4 win over their doubles opponents from Sweet Briar.
Returners
MAGGIE MOODY and
MELISSA GISH won a pair of doubles matches and advanced to the semifinals of the main doubles draw, falling to the eventual champions from Sweet Briar. Lassiter, Washburn and fellow newcomer
BRIANA LAIDMAN each picked up their first career wins as Lady Lions.
Sophomore
MARION SLOYAN enjoyed an outstanding run in the B draw of singles competition. The Greensboro, North Carolina native won all three of her matches and was co-champion of the draw, which was not completed. Fellow sophomore
BROOK PATTON also won a couple hard-fought singles matches, going 2-0 and was co-champion of the incomplete C draw.
Freshmen
RACHEL BROOKS,
HOLLAN RABENSDORF and
ALYSSA MCSPADDEN picked up the first singles wins at Piedmont during the event.
