ORLANDO, Fla. - The Piedmont College women's tennis team swept a pair of matches on its opening day of competition in the SpringBreakSports.com Tournament in Orlando.
The Lady Lions (4-0) rolled to a pair of dominating victories to remain undefeated through the season's first four matches.
Match 1: Piedmont 8, Carthage 1
The Lady Lions quickly jumped in front of the Lady Reds (6-3), as
CRYSALIN GLORIA and
KARA LANDSIEDEL took an 8-1 victory at No, 3 doubles.
After Carthage answered with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles, Piedmont took control the rest of the way, winning at No 1 doubles, 8-4, before taking five of six singles matches in straight sets and winning the match, 8-1.
MAGGIE MOODY started off singles play by only dropping one game on her way to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5.
PC then took four consecutive matches in two sets each as
CAROLINE CONNELLY,
MORGAN BUCHHOLZ,
MEGAN WALDHEIM and Landsiedel gave the Lady Lions a 7-1 advantage.
Freshman
SAMANTHA LOWRY completed the singles sweep for Piedmont by outlasting Carthage's Faelan O'Shaughnessy, 11-9, in the third-set tiebreaker to give PC the 8-1 victory.
Match 2: Piedmont 7, Regis 2
The Lady Lions picked up where they left off for the doubles portion of match two, taking all three doubles points, culminating with Connelly and Moody's 8-5 win at No. 2.
Then, in singles action, Moody picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win to put PC within a point of clinching the match.
MORGAN BUCHHOLZ provided that clincher minutes later, prevailing, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 to ensure a fourth consecutive Piedmont victory to start the 2019 season.
After an easy two-set win at No. 2 from Waldheim to put the Lady Lions up, 6-0, Lowry outlasted Regis' Lauren Mogelnicki in a first-set tiebreaker and cruised in the second to give PC a 7-0 advantage.
The Pride were able to win a pair of third-set breakers to avoid being shutout and make the final a 7-2 Piedmont win.
