Lookout Mountain, GA - The Piedmont College women's tennis team could not overcome an early deficit falling to Covenant College 8-1 earlier Saturday afternoon in USA South action.

Piedmont picked up a win at the #2 doubles spot with KARINA RIVERA and DURDEN SMITH teaming up to win 9-8 (7-5) over Covenant's Gracie Smith and Jennie Spielman.  The Lady Lions fell at the top doubles spot however and dropped a decision at #3 to head into singles play down 2-1. 

As one of the top teams in the USA South at now 8-1, Covenant swept all six singles decisions from the visitors to seal the match.  Piedmont falls to 5-4 in USA South play with the loss sitting just one spot out of the top six in the league.

The Lady Lions wrap up 2016 with three key USA South matches at home including Greensboro on Sunday before LaGrange and Huntingdon, two teams ahead of PC in the standings, visit Burgen next weekend.

Turning Point
--Covenant coming out of doubles action with a 2-1 lead was too much for the Lady Lions to overcome in the singles portion where PC fell in all six matches.

Standout Performances
--The doubles pairing of KARINA RIVERA and DURDEN SMITH who teamed up to win their second doubles match in 2016 with a victory at the #2 slot.

Inside the Box Score
--Piedmont's tight win at the #2 doubles spot came in tiebreak fashion 9-8 (7-5) with Rivera and Smith moving to 2-0 together in '16.

News & Notes
--Since a 5-4 win over Covenant in 2012, the Lady Lions have dropped three straight to the Scots with the last two coming on the road.
--Piedmont came in 5-2 in their last seven USA South matches with nothing but conference contests left on the 2016 schedule.

Three straight USA South matches to end the 2016 regular season starting with Greensboro on Sunday, April 3 with the match slated for a 1:00 pm start.
