Demorest, GAÂ - It took extras Tuesday night at Loudermilk Field but the Piedmont College baseball team won 9-8 on an error in the tenth inning over Oglethorpe University. Piedmont trailed by as many as five when it was 6-1 but came back to win.
Piedmont charged back in the contest thanks to a pair of home runs back-to-back by
GRIFFIN OLSON and
BRECK DAVIDSON in the fourth inning as Piedmont scored five runs to tie the game. The Lions took the lead in the fifth as
WILL SKIDMORE singled to score
MICHAEL BARNES making it 7-6 Lions.
Piedmont tacked on another run in the eighth as insurance and it turned out that run would be an important one as the Stormy Petrels stormed back to score a pair and tie the game in the ninth. The Lions held on and thanks to an error on a throw down to third on a stolen base attempt by
CAMERON JOHNSON, he was able to score and end the near four hour contest in Demorest.Â
The Piedmont bullpen was stellar in the outing tossing 7.2 innings led by
MATT VONDERSCHMIDT's 3.2 giving up four hits and a single earned run.
ALLEN TOKARZ gave up just one hit during his pair of innings pitched and
JOSH THOMAS earned the win after pitching two innings with three hits, two runs but none earned.Â
Turning Point
--An error by the Stormy Petrels catcher allowed pinch runner
CAMERON JOHNSON to take home after the double steal was on for the pitch but the catcher's throw was high and scored the game-winning run.Â
Standout Performances
--
GRIFFIN OLSON recorded his first career home run at Loudermilk Field as he has had his two career home runs come in back-to-back games now with both being 3-run shots.Â
