Scotties Hold Off Lady Lions in 5-4 Thriller at Burgen Tennis Courts

Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College women's tennis team pushed the Scotties of Agnes Scott College to the limit before falling 5-4 in non-conference action Monday at Burgen Tennis Courts.

The Lady Lions trailed 2-1 coming out of doubles, but rallied with three wins in singles play to force a decisive three-set #3 singles match-up between MORGAN COWART and reigning GSAC Player of the Week Anastasia Bennett.

Bennett took the first set 7-6 (7-5), but Cowart rallied in the second 6-3 to force a third set between the two.  Bennett was able to take an early lead in the final set before taking the contest with a 6-1 decision in the third handing the Scotties a tight 5-4 win. 

The Lady Lions picked up a three-set victory at #2 singles to force the decider with DURDEN SMITH taking the win 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.  Piedmont also picked up wins at #4 and #5 singles to go with an 8-0 win at #2 doubles.

Turning Point
--Anastasia Bennett holding on for a three-set win at the #3 singles slot despite a rally from MORGAN COWART.

Standout Performances
--AMANDA BLACKWELL and NICOLE PARRISH were dominant at #2 doubles winning 8-0 for their sixth victory together this season.
--DURDEN SMITH rallied from a first set deficit to earn her win in singles action at the #2 slot. 
--Blackwell also picked up a win in singles action winning in straight sets at #4.

Inside the Box Score
--Two of the three doubles decisions were decided by just two games as Piedmont dominated at #2 doubles winning 8-0 (NICOLE PARRISH, AMANDA BLACKWELL). 

News & Notes
--Agnes Scott has won six of the last seven Great South Athletic Conference titles and is the defending GSAC champion.

Up Next
A road trip up to Tennessee on Tuesday as the Lady Lions pay Maryville College a visit for the March 29 showdown in USA South play.  The match is slated for a 3:00 pm start.
