Montgomery, AL - The Piedmont College men's tennis team could not overcome a 3-0 deficit after doubles play earlier today in a 6-3 loss at USA South member Huntingdon College. In a matchup of the best two men's tennis teams in the history of the Great South Athletic Conference, the two matched up for the first time as USA South rivals this afternoon in Montgomery with the Hawks coming out on top in the regular season match.
PC was unable to pick up a point in doubles play starting out slow and would need to win five of the six singles matches if they were to come back to Georgia with a win. However, the Lions picked up only three of those matchups with
Trey Martin taking the decision at the #3 spot 6-3, 6-3. At #6 singles,
Robbie Werner took his 7th singles win of the season with a 4-6, 6-1 (10-2) winner.
Winning in three sets at the #4 spot was
Patrick Steck as the senior rallied after dropping the first set 5-7 to take set two 7-5 before getting the winner 6-4 in the closest match of the day. Steck picked up his fourth singles win with the victory as he has won two of his last three singles matches in 2014.
Piedmont falls to 8-6 with the loss and is now 4-3 in conference play. The Lions have an opportunity to right the ship on Friday though as they face another USA South opponent playing host to Greensboro for a 2:00 pm afternoon match at Burgen Tennis Courts.
