MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - After fighting through a neck-and-neck campaign in the CCS Semifinal match, Piedmont men's tennis fell 4-2 to No. 1 Asbury in heartbreaking fashion.
The atmosphere was nothing short of electric as the Lions took the court in doubles, with both teams cheering fanatically after each point. At No. 3,
Caleb McElveen and
Horacio Rodriguez raced to a 6-1 success to give the Lions' the initial edge towards the doubles point.
Riding the wave of energy, No. 2 doubles battled in a competitive match in search of securing the doubles point, but ultimately fell 3-6. Both teams now looked to No. 1., as Piedmont's
Charles Parnell and
Leyton Dunn rallied with a crowd of fans behind them. Despite their courageous efforts, Asbury claimed the point in a 7-5 thriller.
Although Asbury had the initial lead, Piedmont men's tennis launched into singles with determination to climb above their opponent. Spearheading the Lions' passion was Parnell, who championed a grueling 6-3 first set at No. 2 singles. Parnell secured the win with a 6-1 second set, tying up the overall score at 1-1.
The score remained tied as the remaining 5 worked to gain a competitive edge and bring the score closer to a clinch. Asbury's No. 5 would be the one to break the tension, giving the Eagles a 2-1 advantage with 4 courts still playing.
Within minutes, the Eagles stole a win at No. 3, creating a tall order as the Lions had to win the remaining 3 courts to clinch the match. In the Lions' favor,
Rohan Kavali soared to a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4, bringing the score to 3-2 Asbury.
Mark Backeberg battled ferociously at No. 1 singles, falling short in the first set 4-6. Backeberg refused to surrender as he surged through the second set.
