Women's Tennis Eliminated from USA South Championships with 8-1 Loss to 5th Seed Huntingdon

Senior Ashley Fannon accounted for the lone decision earlier today as the Lady Lions collected an 8-1 loss to Huntingdon in the USA South quarterfinals as she finished her final season with PC collecting a 16-3 record in singles play.
Rocky Mount, NC - The Piedmont College women's tennis team fell earlier today in a USA South quarterfinal at the league's championship tournament to 5th seed Huntingdon College by a final score of 8-1.  Having knocked off the Hawks in a tight 5-4 match a little more than ten days ago, Huntingdon claimed all three doubles decisions to start the day before taking five of six singles decisions to seal a win and advance to the USA South semifinals.

Entering as the tourney's 4th seed, the Lady Lions dropped the #1 doubles decision by a tight 9-7 score before falling at the #2 spot 8-2.  An 8-0 loss at the #3 doubles spot put Piedmont in a 3-0 hole as the match moved to singles play.

At the #1 singles spot, Katie Sailors fell in tiebreak fashion 6-1, 3-6, 10-4 after the Lady Lions dropped decisions at the #2 and #3 singles spots to decide the match.  Piedmont's lone win came off the racquet of Ashley Fannon, the senior who won her 16th singles decision of the season with a victory at the #4 singles spot.  Fannon finishes the year a perfect 3-0 at the #4 spot.

With the loss, Piedmont drops to 12-7 overall and is eliminated from the USA South Championship Tournament.  Huntingdon moves on to face the tourney's top seed, Methodist University tomorrow at 10:00 am in the semis.

The Lady Lions do wrap up the 2014 campaign with a .632 winning percentage, the best such single season winning percentage in the program's NCAA era which started with the 2004 season.  Piedmont was a top four finisher in the USA South standings as well for the second straight season going 9-3 in league play with its only losses coming against the top three finishers in the USA South.
