#14 Softball Sweeps Second Doubleheader of Carolina Trip Knocking Off William Peace in a Pair

Senior Brittney Head struck out a season high eight batters in game two of a doubleheader sweep at William Peace University as the Lady Lions stayed perfect in USA South action after a four-game swing up the East Coast.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Fayetteville, NC - The Piedmont College softball team stayed perfect in their road trip through Carolina sweeping a doubleheader against William Peace University earlier today to move to a perfect 8-0 in USA South action.  The Lady Lions got out of a bases loaded, 7th inning jam in game one to win 5-2 before rolling to a dominant 13-2 victory in the encore between the two programs as Piedmont continues its unbelievable start to 2014 that has the Lady Lions ranked 14th in the latest NFCA National Poll.

The Pacers jumped out in front of the visiting Lady Lions in game one as they scored on a Piedmont error in the bottom of the first and held PC scoreless over the first three innings.  However, in the Piedmont 4th, the Lady Lions would capitalize on a William Peace miscue as Amanda Burr scored from third on a wild Pacer pitch just before a WPU error later in the inning allowed Piedmont pitcher Jordin Ellingson to score as well giving PC a 2-1 lead.

An RBI single in the bottom of the frame tied the score at 2-2, but the Lady Lions refused to give away the opener between the two loading the bases in top of the 6th for leadoff hitter Abby Atkinson.  Atkinson would make good on the go-ahead chance with a single to center that scored Piedmont's own centerfielder Laura Carter

With two outs in the top of the 6th, Piedmont's Olivia Duncan singled to score Christine Mobley before Atkinson was thrown out at the plate as the Lady Lions tried to push their luck in the inning.  Up 4-2 after six, Piedmont would get another for insurance on another wild pitch in the top of the 7th before heading to the bottom of the frame with a three-run lead.

However, trouble appeared in the bottom of the 7th for pitcher Jordin Ellingson with two outs as the bases would be loaded following the second walk issued by Ellingson in the inning.  Despite facing the potential game-winning run at the plate, Ellingson induced a harmless pop up to the shortstop Whitney Wolfe for the third out of the 7th sealing off a 5-2 crucial win to stay undefeated in league play.

Ellingson moved to 9-1 in the circle for PC in 2014 as she allowed just a pair of runs on the day, only one of which was earned.  With seven hits allowed in seven innings of work, the sophomore struck out eight and walked only two with both of those base on balls coming in the bottom of the 7th.

In the encore between the two, the Pacers ran out of gas as Piedmont scored at will plating a run in each of the six innings in the run rule, shortened affair.  Piedmont scored three in the 1st and 4th and exploded for four more in the top of the 6th to force the shortened game, winning 13-2 to sweep the doubleheader.

Senior Brittney Head went the full six innings in the game two win as she allowed just a pair of runs on seven hits while issuing just one walk and striking out eight, a season high for the veteran arm.  Head moves to 5-1 in her final season with the Green and Gold after picking up the win on Sunday afternoon.

Piedmont's Olivia Duncan went two for four in the second game with two runs scored and three more driven in as four different Lady Lions tallied multiple RBI performances in game two including Wolf, Mobley, and Abby Smith.  Youngster Allison Vaughn continued her push as a possible Rookie of the Year candidate in the USA South as she went four for five with three runs scored and an RBI.  Vaughn has posted a hit in nine of her last ten games out.

With the two-game sweep, Piedmont moves to 14-2 overall and stays perfect in USA South play at 8-0.  The Lady Lions finished their conference trip through Carolina with an incredible 38 runs scored while allowing just five runs over the four-game trip.

Piedmont will now travel to LaGrange on Wednesday, March 12th for their third straight road doubleheader in USA South action.  Action at the home of the Panthers is set to start at 3:00 pm.
