Box Score 2 Fayetteville, NC - The Piedmont College softball team took care of business Saturday afternoon sweeping a doubleheader with Methodist University on the road with each game finishing early in run rule fashion. Piedmont took game one with a 10-0 shutout in five innings just before ripping off a 10-1 win in five in the encore matchup in Fayetteville.
Piedmont's
Jordin Ellingson picked up the win moving to 8-1 now on the season as she pitched four complete striking out three and allowing just a trio of hits on the day. Ellingson also got it done at the plate going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI double to left in the third as she is now hitting .436 through 14 games on the season trailing only teammate
Olivia Duncan in that category as the sophomore is hitting .450 this season.
Duncan got the scoring going for PC in game one with an RBI in the first inning though that would be the only score of the game through the first two frames complete. In the top of the third, Piedmont saw leadoff hitter
Abby Atkinson reach safely with a single before being tripled home by freshman sensation
Allison Vaughn who picked up an RBI triple and double in game one.
Two more would cross the plate in the PC third as
Jordin Ellingson later doubled to left to bring home Vaughn before crossing the plate herself later in the inning on a defensive mistake by Methodist. Up 4-0 now after three, PC would pile on in the top of the 4th with five more runs before Vaughn doubled in a run in the Piedmont 5th to end the scoring at 10-0 Piedmont.
After allowing a leadoff single in the bottom of the 5th, Ellingson sat down three straight Monarchs to seal the 10-0 win for the Lady Lions as the Green and Gold stayed hot with their 7th straight win. However, there was only more to come in the encore between the two though it was Methodist who took an early lead this time around with a Krista Zentner infield single in the bottom of the 2nd inning of game two.
However, Piedmont quickly responded with a four-spot in the top of next inning as the outburst was highlighted by a 2-RBI single from
Jordin Ellingson who was 2-for-3 with a run scored in game two. Now up 4-1 after three, Piedmont would add a run in the 4th when
Jessica Perschka scored off a Methodist error extending the visitors' lead to 5-1.
Things only got worse from there for the hosting Monarchs as they allowed five runs in an inning for the second time on the day when PC plated five in the top of the 5th as Perschka accounted for an RBI single this time around driving in teammate
Amanda Burr to start the scoring. Four more Lady Lions would come home in the inning as Piedmont went on to claim the second game victory 10-1 in five innings, the second shortened game in the doubleheader.
Getting the win on the mound in game two was Piedmont's senior pitcher
Brittney Head who allowed five hits in four innings of work having not issued a walk on the day. Coming on for an inning in the fifth was youngster
Sarah Walker who sat down the final two hitters of the day to help seal the win for her veteran teammate.
The Lady Lions move to 12-2 on the season with the pair of wins and stay perfect in conference play at now 6-0. The only two games PC has dropped on the season have come to NAIA member Brenau University who is currenlty 13-1 on the season and ranked 17th in the nation.
Piedmont will now turn its attention to the Pacers of William Peace University who is 3-3 in conference play coming into the weekend having swept Greensboro College this past Wednesday. The Sunday, March 9th contest between WPU and PC is set for a doubleheader start of 1:00 pm.
