15th Ranked Lady Lions Stay Perfect in USA South Action With DH Sweep of Mary Baldwin

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College softball team put up big numbers once again in a doubleheader sweep of Mary Baldwin College taking a pair of decisions in shutout fashion to move to now 4-0 in USA South action and post a 6-0 mark on the week.  Game one came on a 10-0 scoreline while game two was more of the same as the Lady Lions won the encore 8-0 with Mary Baldwin only mustering four total hits on the day as Piedmont shut down the visiting Fighting Squirrels.

Getting the win in the circle in game one was Piedmont's Jordin Ellingson who went four complete in the shortened affair allowing just one hit and shutting out the opposition.  Ellingson struck out seven batters and didn't issue a single walk as she worked quickly to get her 7th win of the season and 5th in this week alone as she picked up both victories in doubleheader sweeps of Berry College and Ferrum College earlier this week.

Freshman Sarah Walker also worked in the circle for the game one win with one inning of work where she sat down all three batters she faced as Walker fielding the final out of a game one 10-0 win over the Fighting Squirrels.

A three-run second inning got the scoring going in game one as the Lady Lions saw their pitcher Ellingson lead off the inning with a triple setting the tone for what would be a big offensive day for PC.  Making her first start of the season, right fielder Amanda Burr took Ellingson's lead and tripled herself later in the inning scoring three runs for PC on the bases clearing drive.

Taking a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the 4th, Piedmont would get seven runs on just five hits in the 4th inning as a bevy of Lady Lions came up with PC batting around in the frame.  Ellingson would get her second triple of the game when she blasted a Fighting Squirrels pitch over the head of the left fielder Sarah Seekin to bat in a pair of runs.

Ellingson's drive was the second multiple-RBI hit of the inning as big hitter Olivia Duncan also doubled in a pair earlier in the frame as Piedmont used the seven extra runs to run away with a 10-0 decision at home.

Burr led the team in game one with her four RBIs, three of which came on that 2nd inning, bases clearing triple.  Burr was two for two while Sarah Walker and freshman Allison Vaughn each also drove in a run in the opener.

Game two was more of the same offensively for PC as they got it done early this time with five runs scoring in the bottom of the first highlighted by Jessica Perschka's two-RBI double with one out as the freshman extended her hitting streak to seven games.  Each of the Lady Lions' first five batters in the first reached safely as Piedmont stayed hot at the plate.

With three more runs in the 2nd including a score on Piedmont's third triple of the day with Abby Smith doing the damage this time around, Piedmont was well in line to get the 8-0 win in game two shutting down the visitors at the plate to earn the victory.

Picking up the win in game two was senior Brittney Head who went four innings allowing a trio of hits but no runs on the day as she struck out five of the 15 batters she faced.  Head moves to 3-1 on the season and lowers her ERA to 3.90 with her second shutout showing of the season along with a six-inning scoreless affair against Elmira College back on February 18th.

Also getting work with the arm was Kristina Coggins who tossed one inning of scoreless softball sitting down the Fighting Squirrels in order.  Coggins got the final batter swinging as Piedmont swept a pair from Mary Baldwin for the second straight season winning both games by the 8-run rule.

Piedmont now will ready for their first road trip of 2014 as they pay a visit to USA South member William Peace University this coming Friday afternoon.  The March 7th doubleheader is set to start at 1:00 pm in Raleigh, North Carolina.  PC took two from WPU in 2013 winning 7-0 and 8-0 in five.
