Offensive Outbursts Send #15 Lady Lions to Doubleheader Sweep of Ferrum in League Opener

Jordin Ellingson picked up both wins in the circle for PC on Friday afternoon as the Lady Lions won both of their first two conference games at Walker Athletic Complex to kick off the 2014 league regular season.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep in their first USA South action taking two games from league member Ferrum College earlier today at Walker Athletic Complex.  The Lady Lions scored 23 total runs including 16 in the first game alone as they swept the same Panther team that took all three matchups from PC last season and shared the USA South regular season title in 2013 with the Lady Lions.

In game one, the offense was really the story as Piedmont exploded for eight runs in the 2nd and seven runs in the 4th to go with one run in the first taking a 16-1 into the top of the 5th with sophomore pitcher Jordin Ellingson in control.  Ellingson would only need the first two innings of PC offense to get her fifth win of the season going five innings allowing just four hits and one earned run without issuing a single walk while striking out seven.

Each Lady Lion who went to the plate in game one had a hit as leadoff hitter Abby Atkinson did the most damage with her two for three with a career high four RBIs and two runs scored.  Atkinson came into the day with just eight RBIs in her career as she also drew a walk in Piedmont's 15-run game one victory.

In game two, Piedmont would be shut out in the first four innings as Ferrum quickly pounced on the Lady Lions with a three-run homer in the first before adding a run in the 4th to go up 4-0. However, in the bottom of the 5th, the Piedmont bats would once again heat up as the Lady Lions exploded for six runs in the inning taking the lead for good at 6-4 through five.

Getting in on the action in the Piedmont 5th was pitcher Jordin Ellingson who came on in relief in the Ferrum 4th as Ellingson singled up the middle to score Abby Atkinson after Olivia Duncan singled to score Christine Mobley to start the scoring.  A three-run double by Laura Carter added to the mix as the Lady Lion caught the Panthers sleeping on defense alertly taking home to make it 6-4 now as PC surged ahead.

Carter continued her assault on visiting Ferrum when she singled to left in the Piedmont 6th to score Cimberlee Leffler making it 7-4 Lady Lions just before the top of the seventh.  In that final frame, Ellingson sat down three of the four batters she faced with two going down swinging while the final out of the game came on a fly ball to Mobley in left as the Lady Lions rallied from four down to come back and win game two by three, 7-4.

In game two, the team was paced by the centerfielder Carter who went two for three with a walk as she scored a run and drove in four.  Ellingson got the win on the mound as she pitched the final three and two thirds allowing no runs on three hits and striking out four.

The pair of wins moves Piedmont to 8-2 on the season overall and starts the Lady Lions at 2-0 in the USA South portion of the 2014 schedule.  Piedmont fell each time they faced the Panthers in 2013 dropping two decisions in Virginia before the team knocked the Lady Lions out of the 2013 USA South Championship Tournament.

Next up for PC will be the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin College who come to Demorest tomorrow for a pair at Walker Athletic Complex.  Piedmont swiped both decisions last season from MBC by a combined 18-3 score.  First pitch of game one of the March 1st doubleheader is set for 1:00 pm.
