Vaughn's Walkoff Caps Two-Game Sweep of Berry College for #13 Lady Lions

Allison Vaughn picked up the walkoff single in game two's 3-2 victory as the 13th ranked Lady Lions swept in-state rival Berry College in doubleheader action earlier today at Walker Athletic Complex.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College softball team swept yet another doubleheader earlier this afternoon taking two from in-state foe Berry College who dropped a 9-1 decision in six innings in the opener before watching the Lady Lions walk off with a 3-2 win in game two.  It was freshman #ALLISON VAUGHN who grew up before the very eyes of the Walker faithful when she singled to right to score CHRISTINE MOBLEY# for the one-run victory over the Vikings in the encore as Piedmont stayed perfect against Division III opponents at now 6-0 vs. NCAA member schools in 2014.

Game one was taken with relative ease after Piedmont scored four runs in the bottom of the first as Vaughn doubled in a run to start the scoring while #JORDIN ELLINGSON#, #LAUREN HEAD#, and #JESSICA PERSCHKA# all each added RBI hits to the party in the opening inning.  Ahead 4-0 over the visiting Vikings, Elligson needed no more insurance as she also worked in the circle for PC tossing all six innings allowing just one run on four hits without issuing a single walk and striking out five.

Ellingson got the win on the mound for PC, her 3rd of the season, as she retired 15 of the first 17 batters she faced sitting the Vikings down in order in the 1st, 4th, and 5th innings.  The only score for Berry in the first game came in the 6th inning when a wild pitch allowed runner on third to cross the plate, but the game was well in hand by that point as Piedmont led by a score of 7-1 heading to the bottom of the inning.

In the home half of the 6th, back-to-back singles from PC's #CHRISTINE MOBLEY and ABBY ATKINSON# gave Piedmont a pair of runners on with no outs needing two scores to run rule the Vikings by taking an 8-run lead after five.  After a Vaughn sac bunt moved both runners into scoring position, #OLIVIA DUNCAN# singled in both Mobley and Atkinson to push the Lady Lion up to 9-1, enough to satisfy the run rule and end the game after six.

Game two would be a bit closer as the Vikings started off with the lead this time around getting a run off starter #BRITTNEY HEAD# in the top of the first when Abby Daniels singled in a score to put Berry up 1-0.  The Vikings would double their lead in the top of the 6th when Collop picked up an RBI single as Berry went up 2-0 heading into the bottom of the 6th with time to recover running out for PC.

The Lady Lions got the spark they needed though in the bottom of the 6th when #ALLISON VAUGHN doubled to lead off the inning followed up by an OLIVIA DUNCAN# single that scored her teammate to cut the lead to 2-1.  Piedmont watched #JORDIN ELLINGSON# then step to do work at the plate as she smacked a double to score Duncan and put the two squads now tied at 2-2 with the lights on at Walker Athletic Complex.

Now deadlocked at a pair of runs apiece, Piedmont found itself in trouble in the top of the 7th as a leadoff walk followed by a throwing error on the next at-bat led to runners on the corners with nobody out in a tie game for the home team.  Ellingson was called in to pitch this time around after doubling in the tying run, a task she was up to as she induced a quick pop-up to #ABBY SMITH# at third who redeemed herself for a throwing error earlier in the inning when she threw quickly over to first to catch the runner off for a bang-bang double play.

With two key outs coming on one play, Ellingson struck out the next batter she faced to get out of the jam and send her team to the bottom of the 7th with a chance to win it in dramatic fashion.

After the first two Lady Lions went down on strikes, #CHRISTINE MOBLEY# drew a two-out walk to get the winning run aboard, a move followed up by an #ABBY ATKINSON# single that put two on with Mobley only 60 feet away from home, and #ALLISON VAUGHN# coming up to the plate.  As cool as the other side of the pillow, Vaughn calmly stepped up and singled down the left field line to score her teammate Mobley and send the Lady Lions pouring out of the home dugout to congratulate the freshman who went five for seven with three doubles, two RBIs, and three runs scored in a career day for the youngster.

Behind Vaughn's .714 average on the day was #CHRISTINE MOBLEY who went three for five with two runs scored while OLIVIA DUNCAN# was four of seven with two runs scored, a double, and four RBIs to lead the team in that category.  Each hitting .500 was #JESSICA PERSCHKA and ABBY ATKINSON# as the two combined to go seven of 14.

The pair of wins move the Lady Lions to 6-2 on the season and keeps Piedmont a perfect 6-0 on the season against NCAA Division III member schools.  Their only two losses on the season came to NAIA member Brenau University who ranks 17th in the nation in that national poll.

Piedmont will now play host to budding conference rival Ferrum College this coming Friday afternoon as the Panthers visit Walker Athletic Complex to open up USA South play.  The Lady Lions lost all three matchups with the Panthers in 2013, a team which shared the conference regular season title along with the Lady Lions.

First pitch on February 28th is set for 1:00 pm at Walker Athletic Complex.  Live coverage will be provided courtesy of the Mane Event Broadcasting Network.
