Lady Lion Softball Drops Two to NAIA member Brenau University

Youngster Jessica Perschka had a pair of RBIs in Piedmont's 8-3 game two loss of a doubleheader earlier today against visiting Brenau University who took two from the Lady Lions.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College softball team dropped a pair of games to nationally ranked Brenau University earlier today at the Walker Athletic Complex after having started the season 4-0 and undefeated at home. The Golden Tigers also came in undefeated at 4-0 on the season though as the 17th ranked, NAIA member was able to pull off a 4-1 victory in game one before taking an 8-3 decision in game two.

In the opener, Brenau held a 4-0 lead through five innings picking up three in the top of the 5th after a home run scored a pair that pushed the Golden Tigers ahead by the largest margin that Piedmont had trailed by up to that point in 2014. Despite being down four, the Lady Lions would have a chance in the bottom of the 7th as Abby Smith drew a leadoff walk which always proves to be trouble down the line.

After a Whitney Wolfe sac bunt moved the runner into scoring position, Piedmont would get on the board two batters later when Laura Carter singled to score Smith. Down just three now, Piedmont would load the bases later in the inning after a two-out Olivia Duncan walk gave Jordin Ellingson a chance at the plate to help her own cause.

Ellingson drilled a Jenny Shepherd pitch to right field that looked like it could be trouble until Oliver in right gloved the shot needing to secure the ball late to prevent a possible game-tying hit in the inning. With Ellingson sat down, Brenau escaped with the 4-1 victory in the first game, handing Piedmont its first loss of 2014.

Ellingson picked up the loss in the game going seven innings with six hits allowed and four runs given up, three of which were earned. The sophomore struck out four and walked just three as she picked up her first loss in three appearances this season.

In the encore, Piedmont watched Brenau again score first this time doing so in the opening inning after an RBI single from Glenn. Neither team would score until the Golden Tigers extended their lead with another pair of runs in the top of the 5th though Piedmont would score a run in the bottom of the frame on a wild pitch to stay within striking distance.

However, five more runs from the visitors over the final two innings put the game out of reach before freshman Jessica Perschka doubled to score a pair in the bottom of the 7th setting the final score at 8-3 in game #2.

Offensive leaders on the day included Abby Smith who went two for four with two runs scored while Perschka was the RBI leader with her pair on the 1-out double in the bottom of the 7th inning.

Brittney Head took the loss in the circle for the second game as she threw six innings giving up 10 hits and five runs, four earned while walking five and striking out four. Her five walks issued is the most Head has allowed in a game in her Lady Lion career with the previous high being three in a 2012 game against Greensboro in her sophomore year. Head allowed just 13 walks all of last season.

The Lady Lions move to 4-2 with the pair of losses and will have a few days off from competition before hosting the Vikings of Berry College on Wednesday for a doubleheader at Walker Athletic Complex. The February 26th showdown is slated to start at 4:00 pm. Live coverage will be provided courtesy of the Mane Event Broadcasting Network.
