THE COACHES Piedmont Coach Greg Neeley brings an 11-17 record into Tuesday night's contest. Neeley is in his second season with the Lions after leading the team to a 9-16 record a year ago. That finish was Piedmont's best since the 2010-11 season. Neeley came to Piedmont following a stint at Warren Wilson where he led the team to a USCAA National Championship in March of 2013. With a 2-1 record so far this year, the Lions are averaging 78 points per game through the first three contests.
Emory Head Coach Jason Zimmerman has been with the Eagles since the 2007-08 season and entering the 2014-15 season had compiled a 110-70 record overall. Zimmerman is the winningest coach in the program's history as he reached that mark on January 11, 2014 with an 82-74 victory over the University of Chicago for his 104th win as an Eagle. Zimmerman led the Eagles to their second-ever NCAA tournament berth, the team's first since 1990, during the 2012-13 season with the Eagles winning their first-round game. That same year the team won the University Athletic Association crown and the Emory coaching staff was named the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year.
SCOUTING EMORYThe Eagles enter Tuesday with a 4-0 record and have back-to-back wins over USA South opponents LaGrange and Maryville. In the preseason poll, Maryville was picked as the favorite in the league while LaGrange was selected to finish fifth overall. The Eagles have won convincingly in all but one contest including a 104-77 win against Oglethorpe to open the season. The Lions will face Oglethorpe at home on Saturday. That lone close victory came over Guilford in a 77-75 win that ended in thrilling fashion. It took a last second off-balanced jumper from the baseline from Michael Florin with just four-tenths of a second left in the game to break the tie and lift the Eagles to victory.
SERIES RECORDSThis marks the fifth time these teams have met since the 2010-11 season with Emory holding a 5-0 mark against the Lions. The last time that Piedmont defeated the Eagles came in the 2008-09 season on December 18, 2008 in Atlanta in a 96-87 victory.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEKIn just the second week of his young career,
Justin Vallejo earned USA South Rookie of the Week honors after recording his first double-double of his career against Sewanee. The freshman from Daytona Beach, Florida has proved to be a dominating presence at the net as the forward leads the Lions with 22 rebounds this season.
Ten of those rebounds came against the Tigers in his first career double-double as he notched 12 points to go with his 10 rebounds, as well as adding two assists in the win. Vallejo has continued to improved statistically in rebounds with each game notching five in his first outing, seven against Toccoa Falls and 10 his last time on the court.
LAST TIME OUT: SEWANEE 79-62 VICTORYAfter trailing in the first half by as many as 10, the Piedmont College men's basketball team cruised to a 79-62 victory on the road at Sewanee behind career best nights from sophomores
Peyton Luken and
Chase England who both had a career-high 22 points.
Luken shot 88% from the floor and an impressive 6-of-7 (85%) from behind the arc including going perfect in the first half with four 3-pointers on as many attempts. The lone double-double in the game belonged to freshman
Justin Vallejo who contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds for the first double-double of his career in the Green and Gold.
This marks the second straight victory for the Lions who have been rolling and scored over 70 in each outing this season. This was the largest margin of victory this season for the men's basketball team.
NEXT UP FOR PIEDMONTThe Lions will be back in action at home on December 6 playing host to Oglethorpe University on Alumni Recognition Day. Oglethorpe is currently 6-2 with a win against Maryville and has one contest against Berry remaining before their matchup with Piedmont. Saturday's contest will be at 3:00 p.m.
