Women's Tennis Squeezes Ahead of Petrels 5-4 at Oglethorpe

Ashley Fannon clinched at No. 6 singles to help the Lady Lions defeat the Petrels 5-4 at Oglethorpe yesterday.
Atlanta, GA - The Piedmont women's tennis team took a close 5-4 win from the Petrels of Oglethorpe University today. The Lady Lions took advantage of Petrel mistakes to take the road victory.

The Lady Lions took an early lead in doubles play 2-1. Piedmont took No.'s 1 & 2 doubles from the Petrels and conceded No. 3. Chelsea Prince and Meghan Smith led the way at No. 1 doubles with an 8-5 win. Ashley Fannon and Katie Sailors overpowered Oglethorpe with a 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles.

In singles, the competition tightened. Sailors and Prince both took straight set wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively but the Petrels fought back to win No.'s 3, 4, and 5 singles. With the win on the line, Ashley Fannon overcame adversity to win at No. 6 singles 6-3, 6-4.

The Lady Lions move to 9-8 overall with the final win of the regular season. They travel to Rocky Mount, North Carolina for the USA South Conference Tennis Tournament this weekend as the #4 seed. Their first match is Friday at 4pm against the #5 seeded Maryville Scots.
