Demorest, GA - The Lady Lions closed conference play in 2012 on a bittersweet not, splitting a Great South Athletic Conference double header on senior day at Walker Field Sunday afternoon over visiting Agnes Scott College. Piedmont took an 8-0 win in the opener, finishing the game early due to the mercy rule behind the hitting of freshman
Kristin Hamby and the pitching of sophomore
Brittney Head. Game two featured a combined seven errors and the Lady Lions dropping a 9-1 decision.
The Lady Lions scored three runs in both the first and fourth innings, tallying 14 hits in the 8-0 victory. Hamby led the attack with a three-hit performance, including a two-run triple and a pair of RBI singles, giving her four RBI in the first win. Head was dominant as usual in the circle, pitching a complete game shutout, going six innings on three hits, no walks and seven strikeouts. Sophomore
Lauren Head contributed heavily at the plate to back her sister, coming up with two hits and two RBI. Senior
Emily Cheek also had a pair of hits and an RBI, while junior
Taylor Morgan and freshman
Symone Ball also came away with two hits each.
Hamby tripled in a pair of runs in the first, putting the women up 3-0 early. Her RBI single in the third made it 4-0 before a three-run fourth blew the game wide open. Junior
Megan McClain produced a run-scoring hit in the frame before Hamby added another base hit through the right side to give the hosts a commanding 7-0 lead.
LAUREN HEAD ended the game with a walkoff single up the middle to plate pinch runner
Abby Atkinson to give PC an 8-0 win.
In the second game, Agnes Scott jumped all over Piedmont and sophomore
Amanda Posey for three first-inning runs and a solo run in the second. Down 4-0, the Lady Lions, who only tallied three hits on the afternoon, scored their first run on an error on a dropped fly ball in left field. The visiting Scotties retaliated with a run in the top of the fifth, but the crushing blow came in the seventh, when they tacked on four more runs to take a 9-1 win. Morgan, Cheek,
LAUREN HEAD and Hamby all ended the day with three hits. Piedmont ends GSAC play with a 21-11 overall record and 13-3 in conference action. The women return to action at second-ranked Emory University Tuesday at 2:00 pm for a double header before next weekend's GSAC Championship Tournament, in which the Lady Lions have already secured the #2 seed.
