Greensboro, NC - The Lady Lions took a double-header split, with both games coming in nail-biting fashion. The women were able to win game one 2-1 in extra innings before dropping an 8-7 game two. Piedmont sits at 4-4 overall on the season after the road split.
The visitors were shut out for the first five frames in the opening game, before finally scratching across the game-tying run in the top of the sixth to force extra innings. It was senior
Emily Cheek who came up with the heroics, getting ahold of one with one out in the sixth, sending her second homerun of the season over the fence to tie the game at one.
The Lady Lions had a chance to end it in the seventh after loading the bases with just one away, but Greensboro got out of a jam to keep the game knotted at one apiece. It was junior
Jamie Dennis who brought home the winning run with one out in the ninth on a fielder's choice groundout, plating freshman
Symone Ball.
Junior
Megan Kesler lead the offense with two of PC's five hits, while sophomore
Brittney Head went the distance for the win in the circle, allowing just five hits and one run. Game two saw more offense on both sides. The Lady Lions were up 5-3 in the fourth before Greensboro put a five spot on the board in the home half to take the lead for good. The high point for Piedmont was Cheek hitting her second homer of the day and third of the year.
The women were down 3-0 until the third when they got one run home to bridge the gap to 3-1, bringing up Cheek with two on and none out. The senior slammed a double that scored two and tied the game. One inning later, junior
Taylor Morgan laced a two-run single, scoring Dennis and junior
Megan McClain. The Lady Lions moved up 5-3 and looked to be in control and in good position for a sweep of the Pride.
However, the host team scored five runs on four hits and capitalized on an error, giving them all the runs they'd need en route to the 8-7 narrow win. Cheek's solo homer in the seventh to lead things off gave the Lady Lions new life, but they were unable to knot the game and send it to extras.
McClain and freshman
Abby Atkinson tallied two hits each in the loss, while Cheek totaled three RBI and two hits as well. Sophomore
Amanda Posey took the loss for PC. The Lady Lions return to action March 13 after nine days off when taking on Covenant College for a pair at home, opening Great South Athletic Conference play.
