Box Score
Sewanee, TN -
Kyle Davis picked a great day for the best performance of his career, launching two homeruns and a double as part of his 5-for-6 day at the plate as the Lions cruised to a 9-3 win over Sewanee-University of the South Wednesday afternoon in Tennessee. No. 6 Piedmont jumped out on top with a two-run second and never looked back as it won its first road game since back in February, prior to a 20-game homestand.
Junior
Matt Youtsey and Davis knocked in runs on singles to get the Lions on the board early. The host Tigers struck back immediately, scoring in the home half to cut the deficit to just one before tying the game in the fourth on a double and single. Despite the senior Davis' monster game, it was fellow classmate
Ethan Miers who came up with the first big hit, a two-out, two-run single in the fifth that brought in seniors Kevin D'Antignac and
Curtis Cornett, putting the visitors up 4-2. Freshman pitcher
Chris Goershel started and went five strong innings, picking up his third win of the 2012 campaign, striking out four to just one earned run, two total, on six hits and one walk.
The first shot from Davis came while leading off the sixth inning after Sewanee brought in a reliever. The Lions took a 5-2 lead before junior
Tate Koons added a run-scoring double in the seventh to bring home the sixth run for PC. A sac fly off the bat of junior
Garrett Lovelace in the Piedmont eighth inning put the game in the bag as the men went up 7-2. An unearned run allowed in the home half was as close as the Tigers would get, down 7-3. Davis got ahold of a pitch for a two-run shot, his second of the game, to put the 9-3 final on the board. His homer potentially could have been more, as Youtsey was thrown out earlier in the frame trying to steal second.
The bullpen was strong for the Lions, as sophomore
Matt Lisk, junior
Kevin Caldwell and freshman
Luke MacDonald tossed a combined four innings, allowing just one hit and one unearned run. Davis' five hits led to four RBI on the day, as he finished a triple shy of the cycle; a feat that was within reach for the school's all-time leader in three-sackers. Five other Lions recorded hits in the win, as Piedmont scattered 10 hits and showed patience at the plate with 10 walks as well. PC turns to 19-6 on the year and will play at home tomorrow night when taking on No. 21 DePauw University at Loudermilk Field.
