Box Score
LaGrange, GA - Maryville College dropped Piedmont in the first round of the Great South Athletic Conference Tournament, 94-70 in LaGrange, GA. The Lions led with eight minutes to go in the opening half before the Scots took off and never looked back. The 10-point halftime deficit was too much for the Lions to overcome, and they'd never come closer than eight points to seeing the lead.
As usual, the three ball was Piedmont's forte early on, as senior
Josh Haymore hit one prior to sophomore
Kyle Lundberg and freshman
Dylan Delaney helped lift the men to a slim 11-8 lead. However, an 8-0 run by Maryville, highlighted by a monster dunk by Milton Stanley, saw the Scots take a five point cushion. Delaney and fellow freshman
Kevin Kubandi nailed a couple of daggers from beyond the arc to pull within a single point. Trailing by one moments later, Lundberg heated up with a go-ahead jumper, followed by a triple 24 seconds later to make it a two-point game. Again Maryville swung momentum, as Oscar Butler threw down a dunk to tie the game at 28 with 7:41 to play.
That started a 9-0 run for the Scots, and later as the clock was winding down, they went for eight unanswered points to go into the half up 45-35. Haymore buried a deep three a few minutes into the closing half to pull the game to within single digits again, but a 13-2 stretch for Maryville made it a 20-point deficit that was widening still. The Lions did all in their power to maintain the gap at and around 20, while the highlight for PC was a pair of Haymore treys within 24 seconds of each other with under five to play. They'd mark the last that the guard from Gainesville would drain in his Piedmont career. Haymore closed as the single-game, single-season and career record holder at Piedmont for 3-pointers made, eclipsing 1,000 career points in the process in the final home game.
A 9-0 final run by the arch-rivals put them up a game-high 26 points in the final seconds before senior
Tracey Gardner capped his career with a pair of free throws to end the scoring. The Lions nailed 10 long shots in the contest, but fell to 7-19 for the season. Head Coach
Lee Glenn remains just one win shy of 100 for his career at Piedmont. Haymore and Lundberg tallied a team-high 14 points, while Delaney chipped in with 11. Freshman
Jessie Jenkins recorded his eighth double-double of the year with a 10-point 10-rebound night, adding three helpers and a pair of steals. Fellow freshman
Richarson Myrthil also had a solid outing, going for six points and nine rebounds. In Gardner's last stat line, he finished with six points.
