Box Score
Montgomery, AL - Piedmont saw a seven-point first half lead fade away, but a missed Huntingdon free throw with virtually no time left sent the game to overtime, where the Lions took an 89-87 win on the road to close the regular season. Sophomore
Kyle Lundberg's 18 points went a long way in the win, as he led the offensive attack. He drilled two straight 3-pointers to start the game, giving PC an early 6-0 advantage.
Senior
Tracey Gardner and freshman
Dylan Delaney also connected from outside, and moments later freshman
Jessie Jenkins' layup saw Piedmont go up 9 over the home team. The lead held up til just past the halfway point when Huntingdon scored a layup. Gardner again hit a tri-fecta, jumpstarting a 10-0 run that featured a triple by Jenkins as well. Despite being held to just two more points the final 3:50 of the half, the men still held a 41-34 halftime lead.
Despite a few early ties in the second half, the Lions held the lead or part of it until the 10:36 mark in the closing stanza, when another Huntingdon Hawks layup put them up a point. The deficit hit five on one occasion, but the men slowly chipped away to get back into the game, forcing a tie on a layup by freshman
Safari Smith with six minutes to go.
Down five and 1:12 to go, Huntingdon stormed back and tied the game at 78 with 49 ticks on the clock. After senior
Josh Haymore hit one of two freebies, Huntingdon was sent to the line with a chance to win if it made both. The first was converted, but the second rimmed out, sending the game to overtime. A pair of layups to start the extra period by Jenkins was just enough, as the Lions outscored the Hawks 10-8 in the five minutes, holding on for the two-point win despite a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.
Delaney finished with 16 points, while Jenkins had 13. Freshman
Richarson Myrthil tallied 11 points and nine rebounds, as Gardner also neared a double-double with 10 points and eight boards. Piedmont finishes the regular season at 7-18 and 3-5 in GSAC play, polishing off the schedule with two consecutive wins. The Lions will play in their first game of the GSAC Tournament on Friday at LaGrange, with the opponent to be announced.
