Box Score
Lookout Mountain, GA - Piedmont couldn't contain Covenant freshman Bryant Engber, as he exploded for 24 first half points en route to the Scots' 91-78 win over the Lions. Covenant brought a 12-game losing streak to a sudden halt with the home win, as they improve to 5-13 overall and 1-3 in Great South Athletic Conference play. Five Scots reached double figures in the home win.
The Lions trailed by as many as 18 during the second half and led by four with 9:05 to go in the opening half. Junior
Tyler Arnold and freshman
Dylan Delaney both hit triples early on to knot the game at six just four minutes into action before Covenant pulled ahead by seven moments later. Junior
Michael Ross drained a couple long distance tri-fectas within 40 seconds of each other to give Piedmont a slim 16-15 edge with 11 minutes to go in the half. The largest Piedmont lead of four previously mentioned came when Ross again was successful from downtown, making his third triple.
Covenant started pulling away, taking an eight point lead and holding it going into the locker room. For the game, there were six lead changes and three times. The Scots' lead stretched to double digits before senior
Josh Haymore pulled the Lions back to single digits with an outside hit. However, the home team used a 9-1 run to regain control and go up 17 with under 13 minutes to play. As this game saw fit, Piedmont answered right back again, showing resilience with 12 unanswered points, highlighted by two Delaney 3-pointers. His second of the 12-0 run shrunk the deficit to five midway through the second, but Covenant ended the threat with a tri-fecta of its own.
The Scots again went on a mini-run of 8-0, taking the lead to 18, a game-high, before Delaney knocked down his fourth outside dagger. Piedmont's last glimmer of hope came following a three-point play by freshman
Richarson Myrthil and a downtown basket by Ross with 47 seconds left. But the lead was still 12 for Covenant, who hit five freebies the rest of the way to take the 13-point win.
