LaGrange, GA -- The Piedmont College men's basketball team came up just short this evening falling in an overtime thriller at Great South Athletic Conference member LaGrange College 94-87. Despite holding a two point advantage with seconds remaining in regulation, the host Panthers would get the free throws needed to tie the score and push the game to OT eventually coming out on top by seven.
After a tumultuous opening four minutes that saw three ties and four lead changes, LaGrange would open the first large lead going up 17-11 at the 14:08 mark. However, a
Josh Haymore three-pointer cut that margin in half and another from the junior guard minutes later would tie the ball game for the fourth time at 19-19.
It was then Piedmont's turn to hold onto the lead grabbing an advantage that lasted for the next eight minutes until LaGrange stormed back to tie the game once more at 37-37 with under a minute to go in the first. Despite the home team battling back, Piedmont led 42-37 at the halftime break and stayed ahead for the first eight minutes of the second half.
As the two teams continued to trade scores down the stretch,
Michael Ross would connect on his only two free throw tries of the night to give the visiting Lions a four point lead with exactly a minute to play. However, four straight free throws for the home team tied the game up for the seventh time and sent the game into OT.
In the extra period, an old fashioned three-point play from
Will Skaggs gave PC a quick lead but was not enough to hold back 20 OT points from the host Panthers. LaGrange went on to the 94-87 win as Piedmont's shooters went cold in the extra time missing seven of their 11 shots from the field as a team.
For the third consecutive game, junior
Josh Haymore led the way in the scoring department for PC with his second performance of 30 plus points in PC's last three games. The Lion dropped 31 in the Panthers' home gym connecting on nine of 18 tries from the field including an incredible eight for 14 performance from behind the three-point arc.
Freshman point guard
Will Skaggs continued his sensational debut season dishing out another seven assists while pulling down a half dozen rebounds as well. The youngster also scored 14 points on the night while guiding the PC offensive attack.
Hitting on four of his eight field goal tries was sophomore
Michael Ross whose 50% shooting was good for 11 points in the road overtime affair. Ross was a perfect two for two at the charity stripe while also working on the glass snagging five boards.
Senior
Daniel Lampl was the final Lion in double figures tallying ten points on five of 11 shooting from the field. The senior pulled down a trio of boards while collecting four helpers in PC's seven point loss.
The loss drops PC to 8-15 on the season overall while moving the team to 1-3 in conference play. Piedmont will try to get back on track when they visit conference leader Maryville College for an afternoon showdown on Sunday, January 13. Tip-off is set for 4:00.
