Toccoa, GA -- The Piedmont College basketball team wasted little time in defeating nearby foe Toccoa Falls College by 21 points in a road win earlier this evening in front of a strong contingent of PC followers. Connecting on close to 70% of their three-point tries midway through the first half, the Lions led by 26 points at the half on the way to a 75-54 victory over Toccoa Falls.
An early basket from freshman point guard
Will Skaggs just nine seconds into tonight's game sparked an 11-3 run from the Lions capped by a
Phillip Sloan turn-around hook to open up the action. The host Eagles would fight hard to keep the lead in single digits cutting the margin to just six points at 18-12 at the mid point of the opening half.
However, with the Lions sensing their lead to be in doubt, the visitors would begin a 22-2 run to end the first half that saw junior guard
Josh Haymore hit a crushing three-pointer with less than five seconds remaining until halftime. With the intermission score sitting at 40-14 in Piedmont's favor, the Lions would look to keep their first half momentum going.
After the break, PC had to withstand a quick run from the home team as Toccoa Falls rattled off six straight points to bring PC's advantage down to 20. However, the hosting Eagles would not get much closer as Piedmont held at least a 17 point lead for the rest of the game on the way to a 75-54 road win.
Junior
Josh Haymore led all scorers on the evening tallying 17 points of which 12 came in the first 20 minutes during the Lions' dominating 22-2 run to end the first half that stretched their lead to 26. Five of the junior's six made field goals came from beyond the three-point arc as the veteran guard finished a pair of rebounds shy of a double-double performance.
Haymore was one of four Lions in double-figures on the night as freshman
Kevin Kubandi put up 14 points on five of seven shooting. The Atlanta native shot over 70% from the field for the third time this season while also going a perfect three for three from the charity stripe.
Scoring ten points each for the road warriors was sophomore
Michael Ross and senior
Daniel Lampl who helped the Lions to their second 21 point win of 2010-11. Ross also did some damage on the boards as well snagging five rebounds while Lampl never missed from the field shooting a perfect five for five on the evening.
The win improves Piedmont to 8-11 overall and gives PC the season sweep of their cross-state rival Toccoa Falls. The Lions will now turn their attention to a crucial Great South Athletic Conference showdown on Saturday, January 29 with the Hawks of Huntingdon College. The winner of the 5:00 battle will take sole possession of second place in the GSAC standings.
