Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College men's basketball team fell behind early and could never catch up to Great South Athletic Conference member Maryville College this afternoon as the visiting Scots earned a 98-65 victory in the Cave. The loss was the second consecutive for the Lions and drops the team into a tie for second in the league standings with Huntingdon College.
The Scots took the lead right away on a three-pointer ten seconds into the game though Piedmont would claim its own lead just moments later on a tri-fecta of their own from sophomore
Michael Ross. However that 5-4 lead at the 18:57 mark of the first half would be the first and final one for the home team as Maryville capatalized on 19 second chance points compared to just four such scores from PC.
The Scots nearly doubled the Lions' rebounding numbers snagging 47 boards while Piedmont could snare just 24. By the end of the first half, the decision was in hand as the visitor's lead had extended to 19 points at 52-33.
After the break, the Scots continuted to pour it on connecting on over 57% of their tries from downtown over the final 20 minutes to claim a 98-65 win and drop PC to an even 1-1 in conference.
Junior
Tracey Gardner came within one point of a double-double but once again led the squad in rebounding with 10 boards in the game. The forward has led now led the Lions in rebounding in four of the team's last five contests.
Leading the way in the scoring department was a pair of Lions who tallied 16 points each in freshman
Will Skaggs and sophomore
Michael Ross. Skaggs shot an even 50% from the field while dishing out three helpers as Ross claimed his 16 points by way of a 7-of-10 shooting performance.
The Scots held junior
Josh Haymore to his lowest shooting percentage of 2010-11 at 25% though the guard did get to the line to help tally eight points in the loss. Freshman guard
Kevin Kubandi chipped in seven points to go with an assist and a steal on his stat line.
Piedmont falls to second in the GSAC standings with the loss at 1-1 in conference play while moving to 7-11 overall. The Lions will look to regroup on Tuesday, January 25 when the group travels to nearby Toccoa Falls College for a rematch with the Eagles who dropped an overtime decision in Piedmont's season opener 91-90 in the Cave. Tip-off is set for 7:00.
