Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College baseball team took both games of a doubleheader on the road at Sewanee-University of the South this afternoon. PC took game one by an eight run margin 10-2 before completing the sweep with a 6-1 victory in game two to claim its twentieth win of the season.
In game one, the Lions got on the board first with RBI hits from
Kevin McConnell and
John Duke to grab a 2-0 lead. After Sewanee scored in the home half of the first to cut PC's lead to one, the Lions would get back-to-back RBI singles from Scott Haddock and
Corey Lindsey coulpled with a
Curtis Cornett sacrifice fly to stay ahead 5-1.
Sewanee would cross the plate only once more down the stretch as Piedmont sealed the victory with five insurance runs in the seventh to take the 10-2 decision.
On the mound,
Brannon Humphries took a well earned win tossing four innings allowing just two runs on five hits. Freshman Alex Comstock collected the save in his debut with the Lions throwing three innings of one hit baseball without giving up a score.
Game two was a much tighter affair to start as the Lions and Tigers found themselves tied at one after four innings of play. However, the Lions would soon break the deadlock in the top of the fifth when Scott Haddock blasted a two run shot to give PC a 3-1 lead.
Piedmont would not stop there adding three more scores in the top of the sixth on RBI singles from
Daniel Rivera and
Corey Lindsey. The 6-1 advantage would prove to be the final margin as PC completed the two game sweep of the Tigers.
Pitcher
Alex Beebe was awarded the win for the Lions going four innings while allowing a lone base runner to score. For Beebe, the four hit performance was his second victory of the season.
With the wins, Piedmont moves to 20-16 overall while improving to 11-7 on the road this season. The Lions will now get set to host the Great South Athletic Conference tournament this weekend as the #2 seed facing the #3 seed Maryville College on Friday, April 23 with the first pitch set for 7:00.
